Not sure where to post this....
Society is so quick to equate being overweight with a lack of initiative or personal responsibility. Naturally thin people with high metabolisms say, "oh why don't you just exercise and eat less?" Yes, this is very good advice although a bit simplistic. They don't understand that for the overweight, exercise can be very uncomfortable and embarrassing, especially doing so publicly.
I have recently started walking to/from work to save on travel costs. It is a journey of 5 miles roundtrip in 70F/20C degrees humid weather. I wear my work clothing with tennis shoes and socks and carry my iPod for some motivating tunes. I'm really seeing some amazing results (even in a weeks' time) and feel great for doing this!
However, it's totally embarrassing and often uncomfortable. And I am not even too obese and I am in okay shape, considering. During my brisk walk, I sweat like a sow the whole way. By the time I get to work there is sweat covering my face, my hair is frizzed, and my entire back is totally wet. It is the most uncomfortable feeling in the world. Also, I have a serious problem with my thighs chafing and even on one occasion walking through hyde park with my bf, they BLED. (that's why my name is Thunder Thighs
) I've started wearing some lycra bike shorts under my skirts and dresses which helps.
The route of my walk follows a few main streets in some very trendy areas of London. I walk past a lot of pubs filled with beautiful people. People stare at my thunder thighs rumbling past in tennis shoes and socks (I find that people in the UK don't really commute wearing tennis shoes - it's more common in America). I am so embarrassed looking like a fat sweaty a$$ but I can't help doing these walks. It makes me feel wonderful despite the chinks suffered in my pride.
Anyway, I thought I would post this just to say that I can understand why people do not exercise. I am so determined to lose this weight that I will do whatever it takes and embarrass myself any way I can. But for someone less determined, it would be so easy to give up. I wish I had that option!
