  • Time spent strength training and cardio

Is there a certain amount of time that should be spent on strength training per session? Same with cardio.

Right now (just starting today so want to start it off right) I plan to do:

    Couch to 5K training-first rung is 20 minutes 3 days/week
Strength training-4 days a week 3 muscle groups-3 exercises for each-3 reps of 10. I didn' even keep track of how long this took today.

I am wondering if I should add a walk every day for more cardio time or just slowly build on what I am going to do.

    Thanks
    Heidi

Re: Time spent strength training and cardio

I do 30 minutes of cardio (and 5-10 of cool down after), about 5-6 days/week. I sometimes do weights with the cardio, and sometimes after. I've left the strength training to be kind of dependant on the day. Otherwise I end up working out for such a long period of time and don't get other things done that I need to do. That can work against me. But some days I do different stretches/weights, etc. for a good half hour after my cardio. Always lots of stretching though. I may up my cardio a bit soon as I'm getting to that point that I'm ready to. Initially I started with 15 minutes/day and slowly worked up to 1/2 hr.

I usually weight train 2x week for about 40-50 minutes hitting each body group with one general exercise at least once a week. Also walk about 4x week for about 1 1/2 to 4 miles at a time. I work out 5 times a week for 1 hour a day max.

Re: Time spent strength training and cardio

I do Couch to 5k on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

I also go to the gym on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. On the gym days, I do 30 min. of cardio (occasionally I add 5 miles on the stationary bike) and alternate upper and lower body weight training.

So Sundays and Fridays I do double cardio (running and gym), and Monday and Thursday are complete rest days for me.
