  • Cool Running for the Week of August 19th

First thing this morning, ran 20 miles in a light rain, temps in the 60s.

    Nice.

50 miles for the week. This coming week is a step back week, with the following week a repeat performance of the 50 mile week.

Only 7 weeks til the marathon!

Rich, thanks for starting the thread! Glad you got your 50 miles in last week! That's awesome. You will really do well in the marathon, I have no doubt!

Monday, 8/20: 6.3 mile run this morning. It was so hot .. all I could keep repeating to myself was "only 11 more days in August"....

Hey Betty, get that rest in. Running in the heat is difficult enough without trying to do it exhausted.

5 hot and humid miles in.

Looking to a 10 mile race on Saturday, the Crim 10 miler. Probably my favorite race of all-time. Great crowd support and lots of fun and entertainment along the way.

Thanks, Rich! Last night was bowling too so I was SUPER exhausted and finally slept pretty well. I guess if you are sleep-deprived one night, your body says 'okay TONIGHT YOU WILL SLEEP!' I feel much better today.

            Thurs, 8/23: 6.3 mile run.

Rich, enjoy your 10 miler. That's a great distance .. enough to be challenging with no pain afterwards! Have fun! What do you think you'll finish in?

Re: Cool Running for the Week of August 19th

The weather is supposed to 70 degrees and high humidity for the start. Even so, I have a goal of under an hour and a half. My best in prior years has been 1:38 or so.

                Hi Rich,
I hope you don't mind a couple questions.. I am trying to start running as one of my long term goals when started Atkins was to participate in a triathlon.. the swimming part I think I can handle (I am a swimmer).. the running part I think it will be the worst.. Do you have any references/websites/threads for beginners? Are you following Atkins strictly to the letter as far as fat/protein/carb percentages? I am in my 5th week doing Atkins, I have gain a lot of energy and most if not all of the benefits described in the book I have experienced.. today the stairmaster broke down at the GYM so I decided to give the treadmill a try.. I was able to "run" a whole mile on that thing in less than 13 minutes.. (between 4.5-5.0 pace) Prior Atkins I could not even complete a single virtual lap over 4mph pace!

I want to continue to improve these numbers! I can only dream of running 5K much less 20 miles like you!! congrats

Re: Cool Running for the Week of August 19th

Congrats on the Triathlon goal. The coolrunning website is great for beginners. It has a couch-to-5K program for beginners that is great.

I'm a runner, but am looking to do a first triathlon next year. The swimming has me real concerned. I probably need some lessons to develop a decent stroke.

As a swimmer, you may have a heart rate monitor already. If not, that is probably the single best investment I would recommend. Beginners tend to work way too hard without realizing it. The HRM is an objective way to judge effort and effectively slows people down initially until their fitness level improves.

                  Best of luck.
