  • Cool Running for the Week of September 16th

    5 miles in.

This is the week of a 3 week taper until the Chicago Marathon. Only 31 miles for this week. Sounds good after 3 of the last 5 weeks have been up around 50 miles per week.

    No injuries. Feeling good.

How's your training going? Races coming up?

Enjoy your taper, Rich! 31 miles is still a good amount. Stay INJURY-FREE!!

As for me, my next race will be the St. Petersburg Times Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. Its still so hot .. I am waiting very impatiently for the cooler weather to arrive !

After TG, I am thinking about the Gulf Beaches Halfathon again this year (Dec 9). Its a very tough route, but I enjoyed it last year, so I may do it again.

Maybe the Miami Half in January .. we'll see.

Wednesday, 9/19: 6+ mile run this morning.

Re: Cool Running for the Week of September 16th

            Hey, I have a concern/question.

This afternoon I took my mid-week run, which was supposed to be 2-3 miles, could have gone to 3.5 miles if I had the desire along the way.v (My normal mid-week run day is Wed, but I had work last night)

I stretched, warmed up, put on my music, and..............about 1/2 mile in, I HURT! My leg muscles were burning, and it was really uncomfortable - nothing specific or localized, just all over. Also, I was out of breath within 1/2 mile, which NEVER happens - I can run 2 miles easily without losing breath.

So I walked a bit, then ran some more, and the same thing happened.

I ended up doing a 1.25 mile run, and walked the next .75 miles, then came home.

I've been sitting here after stretching, and my leg muscles are doing little tiny twitches. Just little "pops" here and there on my thighs and calves. Doesn't hurt, just interesting.

I'm trying to figure out what caused this tiredness/pain/out of breath thingy. I'm expecting TOM. I hadn't taken my Prozac for 2 days, by accident, so I took some right before I ran. I have been well-hydrated the last two days, and eaten well.

Ideas? Is this common? How should I proceed? I would normally run again tomorrow evening, and then Sunday.

Tape Measure: I've lost 42.5 inches as of 3/15/2008

            Mini goals:
            215 - met 9/10/07
            205 - met 10/17/07
            195 - met 2/20/08
            180

            I survived a two-month stall!

Re: Cool Running for the Week of September 16th

Evermind, could you have overdone the stretching? I dunno .. I'm a stretching skeptic I guess, but I think alot of people injure themselves stretching cold muscles. IMO, its best to stretch (if you REALLY need to do it) after your muscles have warmed up a bit .. personally, I never stretch, but that suits me fine.

What had you eaten before running? Sometimes running is more difficult on either too full of a stomach or too empty ..

It could be that you're just plain TIRED and need to take a rest day. A day of rest does wonders, even for those of us who think we don't need it!

All that said, sometimes runs just plain old SUCK, for lack of a better term. I've been running for 4 years and I have plenty of days when my legs feel like there is LEAD in my shoes. No real reason, nothing changed as far as diet or hydration .. just SUCKY RUNNING. The key is to keep going, push yourself (not to the point of PAIN) ... IT WILL PASS.

Running is an odd sport; somedays you feel you can run forever and other days, it takes all ya got just to finish.

              HANG TOUGH!

Re: Cool Running for the Week of September 16th

                Ok, well..........

I'm with you on the stretching. My idea of stretching before a run is touch my toes, do that yoga dog thing, and walk to the bike path. That's it. So I didn't do too much stretching.

Right before running, I had a tablespoon of sugar-free jello mixed with cream cheese. I hadn't eaten anything else since 2:30, when I had a handful of cherry tomatos.

I thought about the tired thing. It's just that I hadn't had any real workout since Monday. On the other hand, who says my body isn't entitled to have weird rest day needs?

I'm inclined to think that it's your last explanation: It was a sucky run day. I tried to push through it, and gave up, possibly because it scared me. Next time I will try harder to get through it.

Anyway, it was poopy. I will try again tomorrow. In the meantime, it's interesting watching these tiny muscles in my thighs and calves pop up and down. The cats find it very entertaining.

Re: Cool Running for the Week of September 16th

Yeah, my cat likes to watch my muscles twitch after a long run too....cats are easily amused.

When I'm having a tough run, I tell myself this:

THE RACE GOES NOT ALWAYS TO THE SWIFT, BUT TO THOSE WHO KEEP ON RUNNING.

Here's to better runs for all of us!

I just did an easy 2 miles today, not pushing myself. After Thursday's AWFUL run, I wanted to have a positive experience!
