I saw that article in the magazine this morning. I just started doing yoga about 3 weeks ago and I am HOOKED! I feel so incredibly amazing during and after yoga. I resist doing "stretching" after my other forms of exercise and finding yoga has freed me from this resistance (self imposed) that I've been experiencing. The stretching and strength and balance that is practiced makes me feel sooo good. I highly recommend this to ANYONE. It's peaceful and relaxing and better than a massage!!! I'm tellin ya.

Yoga is excellent. I highly recommend it. When I was about 6 months into my Atkins, I tried pilates to strengthen my core, blah blah blah. Well, I couldn't do it because years ago, I was in a car accident and my back has been screwy ever since. Then I watched a yoga program on PBS. On the show, senior citizens were doing yoga. So I figured, if an 80 year old can do yoga with some modifications, so could I! I bought the DVD and I tried it. It didn't pull on my back, like pilates did. And just doing those 4 or 5 postures daily, I noticed a great improvement on my balance, strength and coordination after a month.
Then I moved onto to more postures. Lemme tell ya...anyone who sneers at yoga and says it's not real exercise has never done yoga before! Breathing properly and holding the postures takes a lot of muscle strength because your muscles have to work in order to maintain that posture while balancing. For me, at least, those postures work my muscles more than weight training because you use your entire body for them.
not2late, I absolutely agree. The instructor of the classes I go to is a work colleague. We were talking one day about it and I ignorantly said that I wanted to do exercises that got my heart rate up. She sort of challenged me by saying, "Try my class. I *PROMISE* you I'll get your heart rate up." So, I took her up on it.
She gets my heart rate up alright!!! I am not much of a sweater...but I SWEAT when doing some of the poses in an air conditioned room! There have been days that my muscles felt more burn than if i'd done squats.
I'm so glad she challenged me that way. I take her class 2, sometimes 3 days a week and I also bought a DVD for weekends and other days just because it feels so good.

Also Joy, those exercise people steal A LOT of yoga asanas and use them as "core strengtheners", like the boat, the warriors, and the plank, to name a few.
yeah, I agree joy and not 2 late... yoga is great... I miss it actually... will look into taking the next avail class now at the gym... I don't stretch enough either... when I was doing it back in June, I sweat sooooo much! I couldn't believe it.

I love Yoga. My weight loss buddy sent me a few DVD's on yoga a few years ago. I used it to help me after my knee surgeries - it relaxed my muscles and made me feel more in tune with myself.
