There are various forumlas, but generally they figure it based on height, weight, sex, and your heart rate. That's how exercise equipment and heart moniters calculate it.
It's really dependant on a *lot* of variables, but the best and easiest way to get a good idea of what you are burning is to pick up a heart rate moniter. I don't know that there's any laymans way to get an accurate count, but I go by my HR moniter and it works for me.
I spent about $85 on mine and that was 2 years ago. They're not any more pricey now and I wouldn't be without it. If you're going to work out regularly and want a way to track your workout times/fitness/HR/ and yep..even calories, get one.
You don't have to spend that much money on one though. <shrug> Mine is a Polar F4, and when this one dies on me, I'll buy another one just like it. I love it.
I agree with Brook. When I got my bicycle, I hooked up an odometer/speedometer thingy to it. It also was able to calculate the number of calories I burned per mile. Whenever I compared that number to what fitday estimated, it was never the same.
I monitor my heart rate instead, and try to keep my heart rate in its target range for a good 45-60 minutes. I bought a watch that has a heart rate thingy. It was less than $50.
IMO, Polar makes the best heart rate monitors. I've got an M61 that I've had for over 3 years and its never failed me. I paid quite a bit for it, but its been a terrific investment. Polar makes HRMs in all prices, depending on the features.
Interesting! I'm going to have to save up my money. It's actually not for me. I mentor a girl and I want to show her how to live a healthier lifestyle.
Right now, she does no exercise, eats chicken biscuits and other non-nutritious foods. It's quite terrible. She's also growing in sizes. She feels really down about her size and such, but doesn't really know what to do. Anyway, I want to teach her how to live healthier and how to take charge of her weight and not the other way around.
So thank you very much for your responses. It means a lot to me
