i've been struggling lately with my workout routine. I used to go to the gym regularly and i LOVED it....but with our new school/work schedule it became darn near impossible to get there. so we bought an elliptical and i exercised at home and added some band work and light weights.
lately i have felt "amiss". i decided to bite the bullet. i'll go to the gym when things work, and when they don't, i'll exercise at home.
i LOVE cardio, don't really love weight training but i do it for its benefits. i guess i just get more of a rush out of the cardio. my new goal is to maintain my weight loss and maybe drop that last 10....but to DEFINITELY tone the tummy and sculpt arms and shoulders.
i found this article today and thought many of you might enjoy reading it...especially if you have one particular problem area. made me feel really good about the intensity of my cardio workout as well as the effort i am making with the weights. with all the talk about weight training, i felt better justified that my time on the elliptical/precor was not just for the rush...i am still benefitting from that. and for me, the weight training is just a "must"...no way around it. they both serve a purpose. sorry this is so long.....enjoy YOUR workout today...no matter what, just remember to MOVE!
I'm often asked, "If I do 100 lunges, will my thighs get thinner?"
The answer is "no, no, no." There is a common misconception that, if you work one body part hard enough or long enough, you will lose weight in that area. or, as it is often referred to, you will "spot reduce."
It would be nice if we could choose to lose our trouble spots — take an inch off our inner thighs, a few inches off our waistline. But it simply doesn't work that way. When fat melts off your body, it melts off your overall body, not only in particular areas. And each person's body eliminates body fat differently, depending on a variety of factors such as age, genetics, hormones and intensity of exercise.
Here is the bottom line: You cannot "spot reduce" body fat. You cannot tone fat. You cannot tighten fat. The only way to get rid of extra body fat is the old-fashioned way: through cardiovascular exercise.
Aerobic exercise at a moderate intensity trains your body to use fat for fuel more efficiently. It's all about how many calories you take in, and how many you put out. Through a sound eating program, plus burning more calories during your day, you will start eliminating body fat. Even 10 minutes of exercise can make a difference — approximately 100 calories of difference!
