  • Why no swimming posts?

I'm a little dubious now. I've been doing laps for an hour in a local hotel pool, and I've been in my element! I've not been swimming for years and it feels so good to do it.

But I'm wondering why there's no posts about it? Is it not that good exercise? According to Extrapounds.com I burn over 700 kcal an hour doing it.

You know yesterday I was thinking about a 20 something year old girl who used to post here and swam everyday. She was doing so well but then disappeared. Does anyone remember her name? You are right Steph, swimming is such an awesome exercise. Unfortunately my gym only has two outdoor pools, one is heated but I am not the type to freeze my butt of to get into the pool. Keep up with your laps and let us know how you do with it.

It's freezing here! I wish it was summer so I could swim again!!! No access to any indoor pools around here! What a great form of exercise, works everything & no sweating! Can't beat that!

Oh man, I was on the swimteam every year since I was 8 or 9 until I was 16, and I never realized how much of a workout it was to do an hour of nonstop swimming every single day. Last time I tried it I was out of breath! Unfortunately it's winter, so no swimming for me anytime soon. I used to be a lifeguard at an indoor pool and now I really really hate indoor pools..

I'm lucky that there is a national olympic pool (indoor, and heated!) right next to my house, it was only built last year! It's quite expensive, but it's the only pool for hours lol. I'm having to force myself to go right now because as much as I love it, the anxiety problems I have are making it so hard to go there on my own, but I'm determined to do it. I'll be killing two birds with one stone - anxiety problems AND weight problems

I always found the pool good for my anxiety also. I have suffered panic attacks for a long time but whenever I would get in the pool I was more relaxed, at peace, of course it returned later but at least you get some freeing time from the anxiety. Good for you for making yourself go, I cannot always do that but I do try to do more things out on my own.

Found it, it was jimenitayo always did the swimming and talked about how much she toned up. Doesn't look like she has been here for a while.

Stef, off topic here but what is your weight difference between your two pictures?
You look so good in your newer picture.

                Re: Why no swimming posts?

                Hi Stephbob,

I like to swim but only do it rarely as is a long walk to the pool for me.

If you want to swim as part of a challenge you could pledge swimming miles as part of the January Mileage challenge. Here is the link http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ad.php?t=52504 I'm sure LadyHawke would mind you starting off halfway through the month - or you could wait until Feb.

I had written down how many lengths = a mile, but I can't find it. However, 1 mile = 1 609.344 meter so it can be worked out! (NB not by me, I'm bad at maths and tired to boot!)

Good luck with the swimming and also with overcoming anxiety. Exercise is a great way to do this

would be about 64.5 lengths of a 25m pool...

I love to swim but have this paranoia thing about going on my own and all my friends are like "when i lose weight i'll come with you"

                    Lol, thanks Emma!

Yeah lots of people don't like to go until they look perfect. People feel judged, but I think most people are worrying about themsleves. I can never see at the pool (no glasses or contacts) anyway - I once got into the over 50s section by mistake.

You know Emma, I actually have an indoor pool right on my street at the Public school, a 5 min walk away. But i'm like you I won't go on my own either . not sure what it is... Also doesn't help that it's winter and the thought of swimming then having to walk home in the cold just doesn't appeal to me at the moment.

Maybe we will have to get up the nerve one day and challenge each other. I think it's one of those things, after you do it once you'd be fine...

Emma (didn't you used to be "cinderella"?)-

If its a gym you would have to join, what I did back before these last 2 kids when it was convenient to go to a gym, was when inquiring about joining asked if they had any type of orientation where someone could walk me thru the place and help me get started on learning the proper way to use the equipment and set my basic plan for me and they said no problem and there was no extra charge.....I just asked my 26 yo son and he said that the gym he uses charges you like $20 for orientation now with a trainer.

                            It's a thought-can't hurt to ask!
