So I've been avoiding running because of the weather, i hate the cold, i'm afraid of slipping, excuses excuses!

I'd love to buy a treadmill for this crappy weather, but really not sure if i have the space, or the $$ to get a decent one.

Elipticals seem to be far better priced, and i'd imagine give you a good cardio workout, but i've never used one.

Anyone have any thoughts on them?

or any runners that do eliptical as well? how would you compare it? I'm thinking it would be better on the knees, but not sure if it's as good a workout. running really does seem to be my best exercise for weight control/toning.

I LOVE the eliptical! I go to the Y just to use it. I have hereditary horrible knee syndrome and it's the only thing that's low-impact enough for me. I usually go about 30 minutes on it but I'm trying to work up to more. It's a great cardio workout. I saw one at Wal-Mart for $80 and it's a small version, could fit in a closet probably. I'm very tempted to get one and then I won't have to worry about going to the Y.

I like the elliptical machine, but (this is going to sound odd) the last few times I've used the thing I've had knee pain afterwards! That's the thing I can't figure out--the elliptical is supposed to be more gentle on the joints, yet mine hurt worse after using it.

I'm sure I'm just a fluke in that department--it's a really good workout, especially if you're on a machine that changes incline and resistance, so you can target specific muscle groups.

Julie, I have the same problem on the elliptical...odd because the treadmill didn't hurt my knees at all.
