I was gonna get myself a jump rope. Hopped on ebay, and I see they come in different lengths. Any clue on how one calculates what length to get/use?

Re: Jump rope question
Hi Chicklady,
I think that is a great idea. I am trying to get into skipping rope too in preparation for kickboxing gradings. I tried it yesterday in class for three mins and I was worn out and sweaty!
I found a site about skipping (http://www2.gsu.edu/~wwwfit/jumprope...pment%20Needed: ) which says:
The length of the rope - when you step on the middle, the end sections of the rope should fit comfortably in the hands and reach the middle of the chest.
The site is only brief and worth a look for techniques and ideas on preventing injury.
If you hav a length or cord or string you could try this, measure it and see which ebay rope is closest to that you need.
If you (or anyone else) is interested I'd be quite keen to start a jumping rope challenge - building up to a certain number of minutes or something

Re: Jump rope question
Thank you
So, being short of any kind of string or rope, I stepped on my tape measure and brought it up to my chest. Multiplied by 2, that ought to work
Off to ebay I go.
I'd go for a jump rope challenge as long as we can start with like 15 seconds
It's been at least 30 years since I skipped rope!!!

Re: Jump rope question
Hi Ladies,
Just a word of warning, if you have any kind of knee or joint problems, you may not want to try this, i was asking my trainer about it and she said that jumping robe is the equivalent of doing high impact aerobics with regards to your knees and joints, especially if you are highly overweight as you are literally bringing all your weight plus momentum down onto your knees and joints everytime you jump.
Don't want to burst the excitment you have but be careful you don't want to damage yourself and hinder doing any type of exercising because of injury.Take care of you!! Journey

Re: Jump rope question
I thought about that. I plan to do mine on my exercise mat to absorb a bit of the impact. Sad truth of the matter is at my weight, everything has an impact on my knees(in particular) but I need something more aerobic to do inside on those freezing cold days when walking outside hurts my over-smoked lungs.Originally posted by jrnyback2lifeHi Ladies,

Re: Jump rope question
Journey - thanks for heads up - that is certainly a good point. I would always do in good trainers. I kind of have to do it for training, but I will warn others before they commence too.
Chicklady - how about starting it for February? We could pledge to do a certain number of minutes per month?
