  • runners, I need shoe help!

I have super high arches and have been looking into getting the right kind of shoes as I start running. I have read that for high arches I should avoid stability shoes and go with cushioning.

However, when im running, I feel like I have absolutely no stability and my ankle seems all over the place and my foot cant decide whether it want to land in the middle, outside or inside. I feel very unstable running with my feet and ankles doing this. Is this normal? I feel like im gonna twist my ankle.

I have no clue what type of shoe I am in now just an old pair of new balances that badly need to be replaced.

One site said that for larger frame ppl, even with high arches I needed motion control shoes.

However, another said lightweight cushioning. They do offer both in one as well.

Id like to stick with new balance.

I just dont want to shell out a lot of money on the wrong shoe. I can only make one big shoe purchase twice a yr and dont want to blow it.

    Any advice?

Get thee to a running specialty store. They will have stride specialists there (call ahead of time and make sure they have a stride specialist/evaluator on staff and if they don't, call another store). Wear pants that will allow you to pull them up past your knees. They're going to have you take off your shoes and socks, pull your pants up to your knees and they're going to watch you walk. From there they'll help you find a shoe that is appropriate for you and will fit you like a glove.

Now, that doesn't mean you have to buy the shoes there. I bought my first pair at that shoe store from the person that fit me, but since then I buy them online and save about $15.

You'll be WAY ahead of the game if you do this. It's worth it. I promise. Get fitted.

ETA:You're going to have to figure out a way to budget more shoe money in if you're really going to get serious about running- or any other sport on your feet be it walking/aerobics/running whatever. A pair of running shoes should be replaced about every 750-1000 miles. A pair of aerobic shoes (cross trainers, etc) should be replaced after 80-100 hours of use. Throwing a new insole in them will extend the life of the shoe by about 10 hours, but that's it. What they look like on the ouside doesn't matter. It sucks, but your knees/back/ankles/feet will benefit greatly from this and it'll cost more if you injure yourself or beat your body up unnecessarily!

I would go to a runners store (we have one here called 'The Running Room' not sure if it's there?), and get properly fitted for a pair of shoes. They will look at the way your foot lands, see the width of your foot etc, and decide what shoes would be best.

It will make a huge difference especially for your first pair of shoes. I used to wear Nikes and had knee problems, which went away once I switched to Asics. I have a friend who swears by Nike's, so it's a very individual thing.

I now buy my Asics at another shoe store where they're cheaper than the Running Room, but that extra $20 I paid for my first pair was worth getting fitted.

Wow that sounds like a plan but how would I go about finding the nearest running store?

Just check out your local yellow pages or do a search through someone like dexonline for shoe stores.

LOL Brook and I must have been posting at the same time (basically the same answer too!)

Here is what i found for the Chicago area on Google:

            http://www.runningnetwork.com/stores/illinois.html

            http://www.runningawaymultisport.com/shoes.html

http://www.chicagotraveler.com/chicago_running.htm (there is a link to stores on this page)

            http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc...loc=Chicago+IL

            Hope this helps..

Awesome! Im in nw indiana (just 30 mins outside chicago) and I found a newbalance store in the next town, Im gonna call and see if they do the fittings. Thought I might also try and find local runners and ask them where they get their shoes.

Thanks guys! Cant wait to get shoes that fit right!

I have a feeling thats going to change everything. I can focus on actually working out instead of being careful not to twist my ankle.

                      They feel awesome!!!!

I have noticed one thing with running as well. Jogging is way harsh on my knees. When I started actually "running" with speed, the more smooth my gait was and not allthe hard bouncing on my knees and they didnt feel so sore anymore. Now if I could do it more than 1 minute at a time, lol. Workin' on it.
