I am reading up on exercises that are best for fat burning but also really work to expand lung capacity. I've had asthma since I was very small and it always responds extremely well to serious exercise. I also quit smoking in December so my lungs are just trashed. I keep running into articles on High Intensity Interval Training and it looks perfect. I'm still weak, so I've been walking but I have a Jump Rope. I was thinking of starting to bring it with me and doing super fast bursts every few light poles. Will this do anything since I won't be able to maintain the bursts for more than a few seconds? Any experiences or book recomendations would be really helpful.

Re: HIIT training
Q-this is how I got into running!
I was using an elliptical machine and read up on HIIT. I started doing short bursts on my ellip. Then, when I quit smoking, I started exercising outside. I needed something to occupy my mind, scenery, company...stuff like that. Anyway, I wanted the benefit of the HIIT, so I started running. Literally, I would run for like 10 seconds!!! Then it would take me 3 minutes or more to get my breath back walking. But, I kept at it. Now I run half marathons!
Anyway, I think our jump rope idea is fantastic. I've been thinking about adding jump rope to my repetoire too. It's great for a traveling lifestyle. If you can, get a heart rate monitor and use that. You'll be surprised where your max heart rate range and recovery heart rate ranges are. If 10 seconds of the fast is all you can do, that's great! Do that for a week and then try for 12 seconds the next week. I think you'll build up your lung capacity very quicky. I was so surprised how positively my body has responded and healed after years of abuse with the cigarettes and unhealthy lifestyle I lived. I never was physically fit, even before i got FAT! Even as a child/teenager. So, it's way cool that this 36 year old ex smoker, ex-fatty is as physically active and cardiovascular healthy as I am now. You can be too!!~Joy

Re: HIIT training
Thanks for the support. I am very uncoordinated and unbalanced since gained the weight. One of my friends is doing a boxing bootcamp and she does a lot of jumping rope in different formations for it with huge results. I'm starting today walk three light poles jump till I can't breath, walk to recover jump till I'm toast for about 1.5 miles. I should be sufficiently exhausted when I get back
