  • Strength train at home-ideas

I would love to strength train at home
because all I do is my treadmill.

What basic equipment would I need
and something to give me some
    instruction.

I am sure others would benefit from
    this info too--THANKS MUCH

I have used to local library as my source of info. I have read books and taken out tapes to help me figure out what to do about strenght.
Right now I use dumbells and follow a program from a Weightlifting for Dummies tape (with a couple of modifications). I also do some yoga and pilates.

Buy yourself some dumbells (5 or 10 pounds to start?) and check out shapefit.com for exercises. Make sure to do 2 exercises for each muscle group, alternating days for upper and lower body.

Your upper body workout would include:
        chest
        upper back
        shoulders
        biceps
        triceps

Your lower body workout would include:
        glutes
        hamstrings
        quads
        calves
        lower back

You could do abs on either day. A good regimen is to alternate cardio and strength training days, with a rest day on the 7th day.

        M--upper body
        T--cardio
        W--lower body
        R--cardio
        F--upper body
        S--cardio
        Su--rest

The next week would start with lower body.

You can also use resistance bands or tubes, stability balls, and medicine balls to get a great workout. If you become a member of shapefit (which is free) you have access to the bands/tubes/ball exercises, too.

          Re: Strength train at home-ideas

I read a couple of books and went to a bunch of websites and was really all confused on how and where to start.... i wanted something easy that didnt take up alot of time so I ended up at strongwoman.com....she has four or five exercises that you can start with and it has all the details on how to do them.

I started with the 1/2 pound dumbbells and now that i have finished a whole week I will use the 1 pound dumbbells to sort of gradually move my way up...so i am increasing the weight week by week doing those same exercises.

Now this was the best thing for me cuz i am new to this and this is very new and shocking to my muscles...lol my muscles have never been so sore in my entire life and i was using very light weights.

I figure after a month or so I would have made it up to the 5 pound dumbbells and my muscles will be alot stronger and then i can start to explore other exercises I know I couldnt have done as a beginner.
          Hope this helps!
