  • As a runner how much do you spend on running shoes?

I'm looking for input from the experts - all of you avid runners.

For several weeks I was waiting to start the C25K program until I go a new pair of shoes. I've never been a runner, but I want to give it a try. In the past I'd buy whatever looked good and was on sale. However, after reading some articles in Runner's World (for some reason I got two free copies in the mail) it seems that most recommended running shoes are $85-$100+. Last Friday I ended up going to Tradehome shoes in the mall and after trying on several shoes I decided on the most comfortable pair - New Balance 1223. This is a men's shoe (I have wide feet) and is recommended for someone with low arches like me. After deciding on that shoe I looked at the price - $135 yikes ! I ended up getting them anyway, but I'm wondering if a more expensive running shoe is really that much better than a less expensive one (like $40-$60). What do you current (and previous) runners think? If you don't mind me asking what do you normally pay for a pair of running shoes?

BTW - I did Day 1 of Week 1 on Sunday and I really liked it. I downloaded the Podrunner Intervals from iTunes (FREE). I'll be doing Day 2 of Week 1 either today or tomorrow. It's exciting to think that I may become a runner !

I've spent anywhere from $50-90. I just can't force myself to spend over $100 on a pair of sneakers... Then again, I usually stock up on sneakers when I find ones I like on sale... Sorry that this doesn't really help. I love Asics for running, my friend (who'd been a runner for years) said to try them or New Balance...

It is worth it if it is the right shoe for you. The wrong shoe no matter how inexpensive or expensive can cause a lot of problems. That said, you may want to go to a running store and get fitted next time since you already bought these.

I am not a runner & never will be. I do work with 3 podiatrist who recommend New Balance & Asics for my co-workers who run. They also recommend both types of shoes for us walkers. Yes they aren't cheap but your feet do all the heavy work for you. Treat your feet well!!

My feet are happiest in NB 1223s which run around $135 a pair except where I get them online (www.onlineshoes.com) where they are cheaper. Every 300 miles, I fork over the dough ... its all worth it to save the joints!

quotidianlight ~ Thanks for responding. So far they feel great. The shoe store I went to is know for measuring your foot, looking at your current shoe, etc to help you find the best shoe.

OzLover ~ Thanks for the insight into what the podiatrists recommend. My mother-in-law was also told that New Balance 500s and higher are best for good foot support.

ttdriver ~ Thank you for the link. After I bought mine I did search online and found I could get them for about $15 cheaper. My shoes were shot and it wasn't worth the $15 savings to exercise in them another day. The link you provided is $20 dollars cheaper. I'll definitely keep that in mind. Next time I'll start shopping earlier.

Thanks again everyone! I really appreciate it.

When I used to run XC.....many many years ago, I would spend $80-100 for a top quality pair of running shoes. It depends how into tunning you are....but I would assume the best shoes are now $125-150. I just walk nowadays LOL......

I agree 100%. I did some bad things to my knees and feet with the wrong shoes. So, I went to a local running store and had myself professioanlly fitted for the right shoes. By measuring each foot separately and studying my gait, they came up with 5 different shoes that I tried on and ran around in before choosing the one that I liked best. Also, it was determined that I mildly over-pronate, so I also purchased some inserts called "Superfeet" that help me out with that.

The total for my purchase was a little steep, but after having worn them for about 6 weeks now, I can honestly say that it was the best purchase I ever made. I got Brooks Axiom 2 shoes for $90 and the inserts were another $35. Inculuding the 9% sales tax in my state, that made my shoes cost a little over $136 (ouch!) - but worth every penny.

Good luck to you - I LOVE the Couch 2 5K program!

Re: As a runner how much do you spend on running shoes?

I was wearing cheap shoes and was having a lot of little pains and strains that I attributed to being out of shape. Then one day I really had some massive knee pain. I decided that if I was going to be putting in miles on asphalt with the impact of a 250 pound body hitting the ground with each footfall, I needed to take it seriously. I spend between 80 and 120 on my shoes and but about 3 pr a year. I wog (walk/jog) about 5-8 miles a day 5 days a week. I can tell you that almost all of the little aches and strains disappeared with the proper shoes. But go get fitted for your foot and gait. It makes a difference. Even a great shoe can be the wrong shoe for your gait and foot structure. I have a narrow heel and flat feet and like some of the Aasics. My boys all have wide feet and gravitate to New Balance brand. Some online websites have a survey that helps you figure out the type of shoe that suits you. One might be Runner's World but I can remember for sure. Help here anyone? I don't think you will be sorry you got them even if it hurts to fork out the $$$.

It's not about the results. Its about the process.

Runner's world does shoe evaluations based on how your feet are and give about 3 different options for each. The prices vary on those though too - I believe the article I read had from like, $75-200 depending on which shoes and what type you were. Then again, they also had a little chart saying how to figure it out, but going in and having someone evaluate you (like, on a treadmill) is better.

More money doesn't mean that the shoes will be better for you though.

This is so true, I had a pair of expensive Nike's that wreaked havoc on my knees! I like both Asics and Saucony, I just bought my first pair of NB and I love them! I have very wide feet and these have the widest toe box of any shoe i've tried. I usually spend about $80-100..
