  • Excercise question...yes again...

I'm a complete twit when it comes to excercising so bear with me! Thanks.

So I've been working out twice a day now. I walk a mile through rolling hills in the morning and I do a 20 minute Turbo Jam (aerobic) workout at night. I've stalled a little in the weightloss which I know is normal but I just want to make sure I'm eating enough and working out enough...Does that makes sense? So for example, I consume a total of 1447 calories in 1 day how much should I be excercising in order to lose weight? Or am I working out enough but eating too many calories? I know Atkins isn't about counting calories but I know that you need to eat some calories in order to lose weight. I'm just really confused and I want to make sure I'm doing everything right. I'm sick of stalling.

Also can anyone explain the activities/calories burned table thingy on fitday? It gives percentages to basal/lifestyle/activities and I'm not sure if I understand what it's talking about! Thanks in advance!

    Re: Excercise question...yes again...

    Hello again

Basal - calories you burn just to stay alive
Lifestyle - calories you burn by your lifestyle (sedentary, active, etc..) For this option you would have chosen which lifestyle option you lead.
Activities - calories you burn by the additional activities you do...walking, running, aerobics, etc...

I'm not a caloric expert by any means so hopefully someone can chime in. I think you could up your aerobic workout in the evening or do both of them together. How fast is your pace while walking? I would up my calories too. I know it sounds cliche, but try it

So I would assume then that you would want your activities percentage higher than lifestyle?

        Re: Excercise question...yes again...

Here's an example of my fitday percentages of calories burned on one specific day...

        Total burned: 3398
Basal: 1624 (it takes this amount of calories to keep me alive)
Lifestyle: 1323 (I chose standing work/housework for my lifestyle. I am very busy cleaning and taking care of children all day)
Activities: 451 (these calories were burned by running and workouts)

There's no way that I could ever have my activities be higher than lifestyle. I don't think anyone could actually (but then again I'm not an expert). I just workout and eat at least the number of basal calories daily. I don't try to aim for that number it just always ends up that I've eaten at least 1600 calories a day or more.

I hope I didn't confuse you more. If you have any other questions...ask away!

            Re: Excercise question...yes again...

Completely off topic - you can have your activities be way higher than your lifestyle... not that I'm suggesting it, since it usually requires some intense cardio for like, 3-4 hours a day...

That being said - if you're doing about 30min a day for exercising, it's the minimum recommended. Stalls are normal....

I would think that professional athletes or those doing triathalons, etc... would have the activities higher than lifestyle. If I went out and did that I'd be a goner - ROFL

                Re: Excercise question...yes again...

Like Lyssie said, it's very possible to have your "activities" amount higher than your "lifestyle" amount. On my last training run, I ran 15 miles, which burned about 1700 calories. My lifestyle amount is only 1354 calories.

I would make sure that you're eating ENOUGH. 1400 calories seems a bit low. Make sure you're eating at least your BMR.

Oh wow! Thanks guys! I just figured out what my BMR is (probably should have done it sooner) and there are many days that I am not eating NEARLY enough! That must be part of the problem!!! Holy cow. Thanks so much for pointing that out to me julirama!!!

I better get back to eating, haha!
