  • Best food before running 5K

    Hi everyone,
I hope this question hasn't been asked a thousand times already... I've just started jogging, and I'm going to run a 5K on July 4. I've been doing Atkins since the beginning of May, but still don't have much energy. What would you recommend eating, both over the next month while training, and the day of the race. My running partners aren't doing the Atkins thing and they eat pasta and stuff the night before...Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Michelle

I actually just read an article that the ancient atheletes used to do a diet similar to the atkins diet before competing. It was in national geographic I think.

      Michelle,

I just ran a 5K on Saturday, and I ran a half marathon in January.

No carb loading whatsoever. I eat only meat and vegetables and animal fats anyway, so my food is kinda basic. Meat (chicken legs with the skin) and broccoli, cauliflower or something like that cooked in olive oil.

I eat a nice meal the night before a race, like I described above...or maybe a steak or something like that. But, I typically don't eat anything for breakfast. Maybe a boiled egg or something if I'm HUNGRY.

        Hi Michelle,
I run 5 k three times a week now. I am not racing though. I don't eat anything special just the usual food.

Avoid fiber to avoid tummy issues. For 3 miles, you shouldn't need a whole lot of nutrition. A piece of fruit and some yogurt should do fine.

I run 10+ miles every Saturday on an empty stomach.

Thanks, everyone...We'll see how it goes. I only managed to jog 10 minutes on Monday, and 6 minutes on Tuesday, but with the walking in between, I'm still managing to get a good 45 minute workout in. Jogging doesn't come easy for me, but I figure if I keep trying, I have to get better at it, right? Take care, everyone,

Have you heard about the couch to 5k program? (C25K) It does help you get running. You may want to look at it to find any hints about how to become a 5 K runner.
