  • Da** It Anyhow!

I found out today that I will need FOOT SURGERY very soon.

For those who don't know it, I've been a runner for 4 and a half years. Love it. I absolutely LOVE running. For me, its been my ZEN. I cannot begin to describe the personal satisfaction that running has given me. In a few words, it has literally TRANSFORMED my life, not only physically, but on every level. I've discovered things about myself that only running could reveal. I've discovered that I am a true COMPETITOR to the core of my being; whether its competing against others or just competing against myself. I've discovered that I can not only complete ONE 26.2 mile marathon, but TWO...at age 50+... I've discovered that's ITS NEVER TOO LATE to redeem the years spent idly sitting on a couch flipping the remote ... its never too late to TURN BACK the proverbial CLOCK and see your strength and vitality return just when you thought it was LONG GONE ....

This my friends, is where the story takes a VERY SAD turn ..

In October, 2006, during a 5k race (3.1 miles) (hardly a challenge for a woman who has run 26.2 miles, right?) I did *something* to the ball of my foot .. yes, during the race (during which I set a PERSONAL BEST finish time), I felt a snap, a pop .. something in the ball of my foot/big toe .. not sure which at that point) ... well, fast forward a few months/years ... to today, July 7, 2008....after MONTHS of intense pain, but running nonetheless ... and mega miles ...I would guess roughly 1500 or more .. the doctor has confirmed it ...

I NEED SURGERY ON MY FOOT. DA** DA** DA**...

I have, what is clinically known as HALLUX RIGIDUS a clinical term for the fact that my big toe on my left foot has LOST ALL CARTILAGE ... from 4 and a half years of pounding the pavement (which I LOVE doing, by the way...)... I basically have NO JOINT SPACE between my foot and my big toe, so with every step I take, its BONE ON BONE .... the doctor says if I don't have the surgery, soon, I will have to have complete joint REPLACEMENT ...

    So here's the deal:

Surgery to saw off the bone in my foot so that I will have some degree of articulation (that is, BEND in my toe joint) ... we are talking SCREWS and a METAL PLATE implanted in my foot .. 8-10 weeks of NO RUNNING ... 3 weeks in a cast, followed by 5 more weeks on crutches ... DO YOU FEEL MY PAIN YET???????????????? I cried for the better part of an hour after that appointment....

Help me here ... I am feeling lower than the scumbuckets of the earth about now ...

Fortunately, my podiatrist is a runner himself and TOTALLY understands how runners feel at this point ... his goal is to get me running again .. and hopefully in time to start my marathon training in October ... please God ... HELP ME ...

I think of all those folks I know who couldn't care less about running .. in fact, many people my age who have scoffed at how much I run .. and I think, "why couldn't THEY be the ones with this problem?"

    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    Re: Da** It Anyhow!

Big Big Hugs to you! I can relate on a much smaller scale ....... I don't run like you do but I was beginning to really find my place in running and was enjoying my veryf irst goal coming close of running my first 5K( small feat to you I know) but I found out I had a growth on my toe and needed surgery ........ it set me back 8 weeks of post surgical healing and then I just lost my drive to start over ....... here I am almost a year later just starting over my c25k training so I can get back what I am missing ..... I know with your dedication and love for running you will be back at it ASAP! In the mean time take care of you .......

OMG! That is horrible, I am so sorry. I can't even imagine and I just started running. When you are able to start running again I would talk to your doctor about learning a form of running where you put less pressure on your toes as well. I wanna see you running at 90! You are very lucky to have a doctor who understands instead of just telling you to stop. He is going to be a huge resource for you and I hope you are able to heal as quickly as possible. I know a lot of runners use bikes and trainers when they are laid up so they don't lose fitness or kill their spouses.... did he mention if that might be possible?

I just started running myself and it is such an incredible feeling. I hope to be at a level that you are at someday. I am so sorry you have to go through the foot surgery.

All I can say is that I'm glad it's not a permanent situation. After some rehabilitation you will be able to start running again. Keep that in mind and use it as your strength that you will once again be able to run again.

I'm so sorry again but stay strong! You will return to what you love and soon!!!

Betty, You are NOT scumbucket chum! You are beautifully and wonderfully made with a remarkable gift of running, and you WILL always have an awesome testimony to share with others about running--no matter what age.

I cannot even begin to understand or phathom the amount of miles you have blazed. But I can say that you MUST take care of yourself and do what needs to be done.

I'm willing to bet that your podiatrist has a few physical therapy ideas and accomodations to help you work on recovery since he must know the feelings you are going through. And with the excellent health you are in, the healing process will be stellar (if not better) than the norm.

I know it won't the same and you'll probably feel like you're missing a great part of you, but swimming comes to mind as a recovering exercise. There's power in the strokes!

Running won't forever be out of the view for you, friend, it's just on hold while you take care of your body!

Betty, that sucks, big time. Luckily your doc is a runner and knows what you're up against. I wish you a safe surgery, quick healing, and a speedy recovery.

That really bites. You are fortunate to have a podiatrist who is a runner & he understands what you are going through. Most important thing you can do after the surgery is do exactly what the doctor & physical therapist tells you to do. You'll be training for your marathon & back to your Zen!

Good luck & keep us posted.

Oh Betty, I'm so sorry. I know how much you love the running and how happy it makes you (yes, okay, so I secretly lurk in your running threads and you might have been one of the folks who inspired me to get out there and start running the races). It's true that at least your doctor can understand how hard it must be... even if he can't make it better.

Betty, I am so sorry. Not much to say that is very consoling. But, you know deep down you are doing what is best for your running in the long term, and since this is such an important part of your life I know you will be working hard to come back--just don't try to do too much too soon.

I know a foolish idiotic patient (I plead the fifth) who went out and walked four miles the day after her partial menisectomy because her doctor said she could walk again right away. She struggled with her knee for four months on and off before finally giving it a full month's rest to really heal. Now said leg is 95% but it really did need time and patience (something the brain in the same attached body didn't have) LOL

I will keep sending you positive thoughts and hopes that you are more patient than I was.

Oh, Betty! I am SO sorry to hear this. I can only try to imagine what you must be feeling right now. I can hear the agony in your words.

I'll send up a little prayer that your surgery goes quickly, uneventfully and you have a swift recuperation. Please take full advantage of your rest period to allow those bones to heal fully so that YOU CAN continue to run for the rest of your life. We'll be here for support.

Such are the set backs in life, but my money is on you being back before the end of the year. Follow doctor's orders and this time next year, it'll all be just a memory.

When I get discouraged on this WOE, I try to remind myself that if I stick to plan, I can get down to a reasonable weight in less than a year. A year out of my entire lifetime is not so much time for the joy of being thin.

While I am sad to hear of your setback, I thank God that you took care of it now so that you are only out of the race (I know, bad pun) for a couple of months rather than the rest of your life. Think of the sacrifice you made to lose the weight and the great reward. Then try, despite the initial shock, pain, and sorrow to see foot surgery in the same light.

I pray you come out of this -- mind, body, and spirit -- better than before!
