Sunday: 26.2 miles, my first MARATHON!

It was not as difficult as I thought it would be. I ended up with a 5:41 finish time. I am thankful just to finish! I passed a LOT of people who took off like bullets at the start of the race. All in all, the race was a blast. It's the *training* that was not so much fun...

Julie, that is a FABULOUS first marathon finish time! I'm so thrilled for you! Just think, you've done what 80% of people wouldn't even dream of doing. (and, IMO, there are another 19% who dream but never do !) Congratulations, girlfriend!

As for me, today's 5.2 miler was a monsoon-out at mile 4.1 ... DH and I took shelter at the 7-11 under the canopy for nearly an hour .. it was horrific.....

Julie, that is so awesome. I'm moving to North Georgia next week from Sunny Florida and I want to do some running like that maybe in Atlanta.

I just started running at the end of May. I'm using a beginning running program that I found on about.com.

          Have you always run?

Nope! Well, I ran in college for exercise, but generally only 1-3 miles at a shot. I think my longest run during that time was 5 miles. Then I gained weight, lots of weight, and stopped running.

When I started Atkins, I started running again, nothing serious, just here and there for cardio. Last year I started running pretty regularly (I started doing distance intervals--walking for .1/mile, running for .1/mile, etc.), eventually running a mile straight, then 2, then three, then getting up to 7 or 8 miles. I did too much too soon and my IT band screamed bloody murder and was *so* painful I stopped running. (I didn't know too much about it then.)

This past year, I started again, this time with a bit more knowledge and patience. I was running a few miles at a time during the winter. I started seriously training for the marathon in March (and at that point, I was only going to run a half marathon), ran my first race in April (5 miles) , my second in May (7.5 miles). Then I realized that I had the time and determination to train for a full marathon, so I went ahead and did it!

Oh lord, probably not for another year. I want to try to drop some weight before I even consider another one. I'd like to do a "city" marathon. The Missoula Marathon was VERY small (only 400 people in the full marathon, 600 in the half) and the course was not closed, meaning I was actually dodging traffic! But, I *will* do another marathon in the future, even though I swore I'd never do one again--but that was before I actually ran the race.

Julie, EVERY marathoner swears they will never do another one....then suddenly you find you've already registered for the next one. Its like childbirth .. you curse the man who put you through labor once only to find that before you know it, you're back on the delivery table again...OH THE BEAUTY OF AMNESIA....

LOL! I had mentioned that to someone, that it was very much like childbirth, because as I was sitting there waiting for my massage after I finished, I had nothing but good, warm, proud feelings. Somehow I had forgotten the pain and agony of training and racing, in just minutes! Some killer hormones must have been released...
