    Pics of Betty's toe surgery **caution** not for the weak stomach

    No cartilage on the first metatarsal joint .. yes, I wore it completely off




    Getting ready to chisel the bone down / no cartilage visible on the joint

    After sawing the joint, and chiseling additional holes in the bone to encourage new cartilage to form, the joint is screwed into place with a 1-2 inch titanium screw

    And there you have it .. I *am now* the bionic woman !

      Yes, Glenn .. I originally injured my toe in late 2006, and its been progressively worse since then. I usually run 30-35 miles a week. My surgeon said he's never seen anything as bad as my foot and he said I must be one tough lady to run with no cartilage on the bone for those many months. He still doesn't know how I could do it .. I pretty much said "GUTS" ...

      DH insisted that I get this fixed now so I can run a strong marathon on March 1, 2009 .. so that is my motivation to rest and follow doctor's orders ... its tough, but only 11 weeks until I can run again !

      As "Arnold" would say ... I'LL BE BACK !!

                    The surgeon took the pictures. They have cameras in all the operating rooms which is pretty cool, I think!

                    Sherri, yes, its purple polish .. I love purple too!! (its really good at concealing UGLY runner toenails (KWIM?)

                          Hi Sweetie! Thanks for asking.

                          Recovery is going pretty well. I got the stitches out yesterday (OMG, I NEARLY FAINTED FROM THE PAIN) ..

                          I am now required to use what they call a "dynasplint" rehab appliance to get my toe to learn to bend again ... its incremental, so we start at basically as little angle as we can, and I have to do that 10 minutes a day 3 times a day .. then they increase the angle as I progress .. (HOPEFULLY) ...

                          So that's my assignment of pain for the next 30 days !

                          All in all the doctor is very pleased that I am being a good patient and am keeping the foot elevated at all times. The swelling has gone down, and now I just have the blood/bruise on the foot that is "normal" he said ... basically my entire top of my foot is GREEN ... how lovely !

                          Still wearing the "boot" ... which I'm beginning to DETEST. Its awkward and HOT ...

                          I *am* getting there though!!! Thanks for thinking of me !!!

                            Your such a good patient! All your patience and tollerance is going to pay off. When your up and running again, you can look back and be thankfull for all you are doing right now. I'm proud of you!
