  • Question about building endurance

    Hi Folks,

Im new to this Forum and new to exercising!

I used to belong to a gym and was 175 pounds but of course that was twenty years ago. Now at almost 300 pounds - well 287 I realized I just had to start moving again, I was a heart attack waiting to happen.

Some medical issues prevent me from rasing my body temperature to much, So I took some fellow board members advice and bought myself the WATP walking work out and have been pleasantly surprised. I was excepting it to be just awful but it's actually quite fun and I make it through the one mile work out.

I've added 3 pound hand weights and ankle weights and do the walk every day. My question is about heart rate I know it's important but how do I know if I'm in a safe zone - and secondly being in this strange position of having to watch my body temp (I have MS..no biggie, have had it since 89 and get around just fine)

But is there a way to increase endurance without getting over heated?

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

    Peter

Hey Peter, I was going to answer the other day when I saw your post but I wanted to do a little research first. While searching I came across a great website that you may have seen before but there is a section dedicated to exercise, it has all sorts of tips and information on how to exercise, increase endurance, all without getting over heated. Hope this helps a little bit.

      Hi 64oz,

First I'm really grateful to you for taking the time to research this for me. You would think I would have done my own leg work (no pun intended here) But it just never occurred to me to go directly to the national MS site.

The info you've passed on to me will be incredibly helpful, thanks so much and massive kudos on your stunning success with Atkins.

You know whenever I feel this 100 pounds is just never going to leave, I see the success of someone like yourself and I'm more dedicated than ever.

      Thanks Again,

      Peter ha

the fellow who gets credit for creating the aerobic workouts in this country Dr Cooper said if you walk slowly ofr over an hour you get cardio because of the endurance factors involved too.

SO you can just take long slow walks for building your endurance and keeping your heat down. Those tub soaks for cooling sound great but I don't think you will be able to convince the fellows in the gym to run the jaccuzi in the cool range

        Happy working out Peter.
Oh and do some research on those ankle weighs cause they are knee injuries in progress when you use them.

Swimming came to mind when I read your post - have you thought about using that as part of your exercise?

I thought the same thing, Peter. It's hard to get overheated in the water. Or is it?

              Loonatika & Piasabird, :wave

Swimming is great for me, Now if only I can find a Parachute to make myself a bathing suit!
J/K! around here the health clubs are so expensive I can't afford to join up so I'm making WATP my program for now...when the warm weather hits? Ocean here I come..

Of course I always run the risk of getting harpooned.

              Thanks for posting,

              Peter :icondance

I understand about the outrageous prices for joining a health club though. We've been checking out the clubs in our area. Even the Y.M.C.A. is too expensive as far as I'm concerned. It has other drawbacks, too, but that's another story. lol

Do you walk indoors on a treadmill? I wish I had one. My bf and I do a lot of cycling when the weather permits. I really like it.

And I love the ocean! :joy You're so lucky!

                Peace and Love,

                Lera
