  • Should I lift weights?

I am about one week into induction and I'm aiming to lose weight, i know that lifting weights makes you gain muscle and last time I lifted weights my weight ended up staying the same before I started Atkins and was trying to lose weight another way.My eventual goal is to get to 130 get then up to 150 by just building muscle. I normally do aerobics for 30 minutes a day should I add some moderate weight lifting to it?

I am not an expert or anything but I think you should lift. There are many ways to lift weight - sure you can go hard core and eat lots and lots of protein and super build muscle. But doing some strength training just to maintain muscle could still benefit you without bulking you up.

Would I still be losing weight contiously like I am now if i just lift weights to maintain muscle?

            Re: Should I lift weights?

Well the question is do you want to lose muscle? Is the number on the scale so important to you that you are willing to part with some muscle in the process?
I think that sticking with cardio - maybe doing some core work - abs - yoga -pilates would be great if you are too nervous about those dumbbells.

              Re: Should I lift weights?

I don't mind parting with some muscle, I'm going to gain 20 pounds of muscle back after I hit my goal weight anyway. I guess i can try some cardio workouts.

                yes, lift.
If you gain muscle, you burn more fat all the time.
If you do aerobics, you just burn calories then and for a little bit afterwards.
                Muscle is a good thing.

                  Re: Should I lift weights?

                  Hi Arsenic.

I don't understand how tall you are, which I think is important, but my opinion on basically everything in the world is that you should be lifting.

I agree with what Liv said, but you also have to consider that if you are lifting weights *while* losing fat, then you are saving time at the end of the process. I guess I am not completely understanding why you need to go down to 130 to go up to 150 instead of gaining muscle mass now, and just going down to eliminate the fat while building the muscle? So you may not weigh 130 when you have a low percentage of body fat, but you would already have a good base of muscles.

Yes. Lift. - Though - Moderate weight lifting? You're not going to put on 20lbs of muscle with "moderate" weight lifting. You're gonna have to bust .

As weird as this may sound I'm going down to 130 then back up to 150 because if I lift weights I may stay the same weight and I wouldn't be sure about how much fat I'm losing.

Eventually I plan on lifting heavy when I hit 130.

You can actually have your body fat checked in a variety of ways.

Anyway, if your goal is just to lose weight, and look worse, and then go back to try and clean up the mess, if you do more than half an hour of cardio, it will help you lose faster and then you can hit your goal of 130.

Why would you wait? Why would you rob yourself of the benefits of lifting now, adding the muscle, burning more calories, and saving yourself time?

If I lift weights now I may stay the same weight and I wouldn't be sure about how much fat I'm losing. Unless I can find a way get my body fat checked daily I'm relying on the scale. The only cardio i really do is an hr to 2 hrs of running every Saturday with my friend.
