  • sigh. Met with a personal trainer today, did not go well.

I am wanting to start at a gym and do personal training 3x/week and I have had a hard time finding a good* gym in Seattle. I finally find a great one, though it's expensive, and I met with the personal trainer today and got this big lecture on low-carbing. I am sooooo tired of the lectures on it!

Now I am thinking I might find another gym. This gym is small, but has some unique equipment, but it's very pricey and I think I am the fattest person there. It'd be nice to have a personal trainer who has worked with overweight people.

*good is of course subjective, but I want a gym with newer equipment, good hours, parking, and personal trainers.

I had the same problem when I saw a personal trainer so I decided to not talk about it to him anymore and just do what I know works. Doctors, co-workers, friends, relatives, even total strangers express their opinions and ultimately we have to stand strong and just do what we believe in irreguardless of what others say or think.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions re a gym, as I don't live in Seatle, I hope you find a place that you feel comfortable with.

Thanks, liz. Luckily my friends are okay with it and my family is totally supportive. It's just the people I meet at the gym who want to lecture me.

So I have a new trainer that I really like, but he thinks my carbs are way too low. I am on rung 1.

I am worried that at the pace I am working out, my body might be burning proteins from my muscles.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I am thinking of maybe drinking two low carb protein drinks a day, even though I am not supposed to. I have a lot of natural muscle and that is a valuable tool, I don't want to compromise it!

I have a few friends that are trainers and each of them has told me that it's not bad to do a low carb diet but that the preferred diet when exercising is a GOOD carb diet. Basically eating oatmeal and a piece of fruit (preferable a banana) for breakfast and then for lunch or dinner you can have brown rice (a small serving), a piece of either chicken, steak or fish about the size of your palm and a veggie. They also recomended having two small snacks in between meals such as a filling fruit. I ate this way for a few weeks but wasn't working out like I should have been doing with the diet so I don't know how well it works...but that's what trainers think

I'm gonna chime in and say all of it's crap.

            Sorry..but it is.

If you feel fine and your body is responding fine to the workouts- you have the energy to get through them- then what you're doing is working just fine for you.

I'll go even further and say this: EVERYONE burns off those carbs for that "extra" energy in about the first 15-20 minutes before they dig into the fat stores. Guess what? If you're eating low carb, you're getting to that point faster and the energy they're claiming throughout the workouts is largely psychological. Ask Sugarless4life how badly she tanks on her marathon runs that she can't do according to all of them because she's a low-carber.

Oh...personal trainers- unless they have a degree in nutrition- are speaking from opinion and not education. Most doctors can't speak knowledgeably about nutrition from their 1 semester of training on it. Nutritionists have had the USRDA and Food Pyramid shoved down their throats- and if I had paid that much for that education, I'd probably snarl at anyone who tried to say differently too. LOL

Your personal trainers are great for teaching you to use equipment and help you build a routine that's structured around your goals and your limitations, but the next time they start spouting about nutrition, tell them to can it. You are paying them..not the other way around. Get from them what you need.

I'm no expert but I agree with Brook. I have done some vigorous workouts recently - Body Pump and Aerotone with an army bootcamp style and I have been fine. If you feel OK then please just stick to the program. There are a lot of people (professionals - pharmacists, doctors, gym instructors included) that make these sweeping statements without ever researching low carbing. Good luck with finding the right trainer and gym. I personally refrained from telling mine that I am low carbing to avoid any potential argument

Thank you everyone for the advice. I decided to up my carbs a bit (fruit, yogurt), but I've been stalled for a week and am now out of ketosis.

My workouts are intense. I work with my trainer 3x/week and he pushes me to the brink. Then I work out 4 days a week on my own, doing treadmill and stairs. I get my heartrate above 150 and a lot of times it's in the 160's. So I am very frustrated that my weight loss has stalled, when I managed to lose almost 20 pounds on induction!

                  Jessica,

Atkins works. Atkins with exercise works. Atkins + extra carbs + exercise will NOT work. Try going back to induction and working out as you have been. You may have induction flu for a couple of days, but after that you will have PLENTY of energy for your workouts. I've benchpressed hundreds of pounds, done kick-*** runs, and squatted my butt off (literally!) all while low-carbing. Do not fall for the hype. And if you really think you need more carbs, climb the OWL ladder the right way, and you'll be fine.

If you are eating fruit and yogurt you are not doing induction.
The secret to losing weight is how we eat not exercise. Exercise makes us keep and build muscles, firm us up, give good posture, strong heart and bones. It helps with metabolism so we should absolute be doing it. You can eat more veggie carbs if you like and move up the ladder as Atkins wrote it (so more veggies, then dairy, then nuts and seeds etc). It should work. Also you are likely building muscles and therefore getting thinner. Do you measure?

Stick with Atkins to the letter. Do your workouts (wherever you feel most comfortable) and don't listen to the naysayers. Go by the way you feel.
                      I'm sure you'll do fine.

Jessicazi - I live in Seattle and am new to Atkins (day 3, woo-hoo). While I'm unemployed, thus cannot afford a gym, I'd be happy to get together and go for a walk, swap recipes, what have you. Feel free to email me.

BTW - I ran my first mile in 6 months today, and was a little nervous, but felt great afterward! On induction!

If anyone can tell me how to get my ticker to work, please email me privately. I've to 70 pounds to lose, and could use the cute motivator.

Re: sigh. Met with a personal trainer today, did not go well.

I don't know what part of Seattle you live in, but I work out at 24 hour fitness in Lynnwood. I used a personal trainer while I was on Atkins in 2003 and when he gave me the little diet speech I just gave him the "triple right," which is nodding my head and saying, "right right right" to all the diet advice he was giving me. Then I never told him what diet I was actually on because really its non of his business. I ended up losing a ton of weight in the 4 weeks I was with him. All the while he was saying, "Man I know the diet we have you on sucks and you're hungry a lot, but look at these great results!"

So my advice, as a relatively new member, but an old Atkins dieter is if you want a trainer give him the triple right on his/her diet advice and just do the exercises he tells you to do.

Re: sigh. Met with a personal trainer today, did not go well.

the Atkins diet makes your muscles insulin sensitive in other words your body builds muscle faster than a high carb diet

for example you been on the diet for months and now have insulin sensitive muscles all the carbohydrate glucose you eat will go straight to your muscles and not be used to store fat as long as you keep working your muscles out like heavy weight lifting

and once all the carb glucose is spent on builidng muscle and 50 grams for that part in your brain then you will just get the rest of the glucose your body and muscles need from protein protein has a 56 or 57% conversion rate to a healthy glucose that does not spike your blood sugar levels and your muscles and that part in your brain will just fuel and build off that

you can keep your muscles insulin sensitive while still eating 50-80?? carbs a day i think

these videos will explain it well

YouTube - BODY BY SCIENCE 5 (The Science Of Fat Loss -- Part 1)

YouTube - BODY BY SCIENCE 5 (The Science Of Fat Loss -- Part 2)

so ya the Atkins diet is the best universal diet for being healthy and building muscle you dont need high carbohydrates 50-80 a day is good not counting protein

i have been on the Atkins diet for 5 years and been going to the gym for the past year and a half and i have gained ALOT of muscle by just eating 50-60 carbs a day

since going to the gym and doing heavy weight lifting and short 7 min max resistance cardio i must have lost another 40 pounds of fat and gained 40 pounds of muscle

                            ---------------------

also i tested this recently there is another way to build muscle.... the ketogenic bodybuilding diets but its experimental risky and should not be done

you know how the Atkins diet makes your muscles insulin sensitive? well every month or so you could try massive overloading on carbohydrates and protein for 1 day and after you had a INTENSE HEAVY LIFTING WORKOUT and have completely drained all the glucose out of your muscles

so when your muscles are super insulin sensitive geting that giant toxic blood sugar spike will force your body to make a ton of insulin and with all that insulin and protein it will fill your sensitive to insulin muscles to the max you only eat high carb 1 day per month any longer and your muscles will be unable to soak up the glucose and it will spill and you will gain fat instead

then you immediently go back to the Atkins diet so your muscles stay insulin sensitive

last time i tried it with in 2 hours i got very sore muscles... and i felt sick so really i dont think its worth it not to mention your muscles may temporary become insulin resistant so you will have bad work outs after that or have to eat extra extra protein for awhile i think

the only time are ancestors could do something like that was for 2 months out of each year before winter when all the fruit was ready

or if one day they risked attacking a bee hive to get a whole bunch of honey
