  • Bonking hard during Induction

I am really bonking hard running and mountain biking into my 5th day. I do 20 minutes cardio minumum every day. I'm not an athlete but I do mountain bike every weekend and it was REALLY painful today. Any time I pegged my heart rate (hill climb, mud etc) I got dizzy and weak.

Is this normal? Will it go away? Is there any foods that I could have the night before or in the morning that would help fuuel me better?

Any help/answers here would be greatlyt appreciated. I really like what the program is doing for me other than the athletic mal performance.

Are you making sure you stay hydrated?
    Drinking enough water?

endo, try 1/2 c. pumpkin (it's in the induction friendly "other" veggies).

You can mix it with cream cheese, cinnamon, and splenda and microwave a nice pumpkin pie-like treat. Or you can just mix it with pumpkin pie spice and splenda and warm it up.

That, along with 1/2 c. of green beans with dinner, really made the difference when I "bonked" during induction.

I drank 100oz camel back with 2 scoops of HEED Hammer HEED - Electrolyte Sports Drink and I usually never finish that amount. I really haven't been eating a lot of fat either and I wonder if I should do something different there.

If you are doing Atkins you cannot have HEED. Just have a look at the list of ingredients and the amount of carbs in that baby. You may as well just eat sugar.

Fat is key on Atkins. You have turned your body into a fat burning machine, and while yes, you want to burn your body fat, you still need to eat liberal amounts. Eating your fats will not mean you don't burn body fat, and it will give you your fuel.

well silly me thought i needed to add some carbs during my ride. i thought i'd burn them right off as a cheap fuel source. not part of the program obviously. i will be patient and wait for my body to get tuned into this.

                Re: Bonking hard during Induction

                Hi All,

I am having a similar problem. I am 16 days into Atkins.

I am well on my way to losing the weight I want to thanks to Atkins and my road bike. I do have a question about how much biking I can do while on Atkins. I was biking before starting Atkins but now that I am cutting out most carbs from my diet I find that I do not have the energy to bike like I used to. If I bike over an hour I really have problems. Also I think that I have significantly less energy when climbing hills.

Is this normal? I am guessing that because I am on a low carb diet that my body takes longer to convert it's stores to energy then when I ate more carbs.

I find rides of 10-12 miles are fine - except for having less energy for the hills. I did a 20 mile ride this weekend at it was horrible. I Bonked at about 14 miles. Should I limit my rides to the 10-12 mile distance while I am on Atkins? I would really appreciate to hear from someone that understands what is going on here.

What does bonking mean? In the UK, it is slang for um... sexual intercourse so I was wondering what this thread was all about LOL!

Wikipedia has all the definitions. Here it means "Hitting the Wall", a condition caused by the depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, which manifests itself by precipitous fatigue and loss of energy.

From past experience I have found that I need to eat 30 minutes before a hard exercise or riding session. Fat DOES help in this also, helps to give energy during those ride. It is something that your body will have to adjust to, so eat up in the right amount of time for you before the ride and don't be afraid of the fat....

That's what I thought it meant too! Of course, I just had to read this thread to see what was going on.

I have to say...I was a little disappointed it was about running and such.
