    Anyone walked/jogged/wogged/crawled a half marathon?

There's a 95% chance that a half marathon will come to my small town America this fall and a couple of friends have yapped my ear off trying to convience me to join them in this crazy adventure.

Now, here's why I'm asking if you've done one because the most I've accomplished at one time is a 5k (3.1 miles) and that's been walking. I want to build up to 13 miles because I'm smart enough to know that anything more than 5 miles and my body will just give up. My two friends believe that they can drag me along on their wogging adventure this summer and we can be prepared for the half marathon this fall. Hey, anything can happen, right?

Got an advice or directions to a website that provides marathon newbies help?

    Re: Half marathoners

I would suggest the couch to 5k program to learn to run progressively longer distances!

I've run a boatload of races, and tons of of half marathons! I love the 13.1 mile distance!

Build slowly and progressively and allow your body to rest/recover ...

Thanks, Betty. I admire your many races and determination. I'm hoping for the endurance to get through a 10k to build up to a half marathon. You're right about the couch to 5k...I did that one last summer. I have a really hard time keeping track of the times without having a treadmill...I did so well with one before I sold it last fall. I have sellers remorse. Any how, it looks like C25k will be the one we use...or atempt to follow at best to build endurance and longer distances.

      thanks!

        Re: Half marathoners

I found two friends to do the C25k with me.....outside. It'll be great. I'm going today to buy a stopwatch, print off the C25k again (since the one I printed off a few months ago is MIA), put that in sheet protector and hang it on the fridge so I can mark off the days that I do (a little too OCD perhaps?), and then we're getting moving. Okay, so I'm an over planner before I actually do something. It's part of the mental game of doing, I guess.

          Lisa that's a GREAT plan!

Down the road (pardon the pun), you might consider purchasing a heart-rate monitor ... much more accurate than a stopwatch, albeit a little pricier....just a thought!

Best wishes to you on your running journey! Come post in the cool running thread and let us know how its going!

Lisa that is wonderful that you are going to do a half marathon. I have no useful advice but I am cheering you on. I hope that helps

I would love to be there with you again. I ahve a small work problem that seems to prevent me from running. I walk an average of 6-9-kms at work every day and then I am burnt and that's all stairs rofl.

I know you will do well. Push yourself but, not to the point of making it so you don';t want to do it any more. Just do what feels right to your body

Thanks for your cheers and support.

I'm going to stick to the underachievers side of jogging and go for the the 5k and then work towards a 10k. I figured that's safe enough, even if I have to walk the 10k lol.

Even if you have to walk that is GREAT.

I really need someone to kick my ars on my days off, it's too bad those are few and far between.

Working a stretch of 7 with 1 off then another 5 that's like 144 hours in 12 days ACK!!

I am soooo tired I will tell you that.

                    Re: Half marathoners

For any distance run. You should run distance rather than for speed. A run/walk distance ie: run 20 minutes walk 5 minutes until your distance is complete and then improve on that.
