I started doing this sidebend exercising at the gym on this stand still machine thing and my sides and hips are sore, thats a good thing though cuz that means its muscles that im using now that i hadnt been using right? Also do sidebends really help the waist hip area? thanks

It seems to me that the act of straightening after the bend would *have* to be good for your oblique (waistline) muscles, wouldn't it?

The soreness is fine and will pass. However don't get into the mindset that it HAS to hurt to be effective. After a while you won't feel that soreness so much, some people push too far to try and get back to that level where they are sore, its not necessary.A.K.A: 64oz

Assuming the soreness is not from an injury, some soreness should be expected when you start working out a part of the body that you normally don't work out.
when this sore feeling happens in the chest, biceps, triceps and back or leg muscles, this is what bodybuilders call "feeling pumped."
