  • anyone successful with weight training/muscle building

I use to have a good amount of muscle mass before but I also gained alot of weight. Now I am on atkins 3 months so far and am about 10-15lb away from my goal. I have lost most of my muscle due to dieting/ not exercising.

I know of the CKD diet and dont want to try that yet. I was wondering if its possible to gain some of that muscle mass back while still being on atkins. i dont want to be arnold, but a nice muscle definition to go along with my weight loss would be a cherry on top of my commitment to atkins.
I know carb is neeeded to create insulin to create muscle mass but just wondering if anyone has been an exception to the rule that u need carbs to build muscle.

I don't think it is generally true that you lose muscle when doing low carb. I think you lose fat. I think that is very clear if we measure your progress - rather than just doing the scale. There are times when atkineers will see progress on inches rather than on the scale.

That being said - Atkins does tell us to exercise and we do from the very beginning. I have lifted weights for most of this journey and I still do. For an older girl I do have plenty of muscle - I am nice and firm

Dr. Atkins wrote that if we are not exercising, we are not following his plan. So, if you've been on Atkins for 3 months and did not exercise....

the rule that u need carbs to build muscle
There's no "rule" that says one needs dietary carbohydrate to create muscle mass.

Re: anyone successful with weight training/muscle building

I have been excercising, but mostly aerobics/running/sports

My muscle loss has nothing to do with atkins Im sure, It was before i started the diet and stoped working out.

has any guy built defination while on atkins, muscle that wasnt there when they started the diet ?

I work out a lot and my workouts consist of cardio and weights. When I have increased my workouts with weights I most certainly gained muscle mass....it happened for me eating this way.

Re: anyone successful with weight training/muscle building

Kind of an old thread but I'll respond with my experience. While my weight isn't down to where it needs to be to see much definition I can tell you I have seen a HUGE increase in strength in the 11 weeks I've been on the weights/Atkins. PM me if you want details, but they're all compound movements(squats, deadlifts, bench etc.).

The key to gaining muscle mass is to eat, and eat a lot(but eat the right things). I eat around 2700-2900 calories a day and while my weight has only gone down 25 pounds in 11 weeks, I've lost 10 inches off my waist and seen huge increases in strength.

You should also note, that while I increased my protein intake to help with muscle mass, I still get 65% of my calories from fat, 30% from protein, and 5% from carbs.

Also the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn.

              Hope that answers your question.
