I was wondering if someone could explain curves to me. I see that a lot of people on here go to curves, but I went to their website and I dont quite get it. How much does it cost? Is it a program like WeightWatchers or more like a gym? It sounds interesting, but I'd like an insider's point of view. ha

One of the more influential people on this board actually works at a curves place.

I'll get in touch with her for you. her name is Bren btw, she used to be the Admin here, for quite a while.

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

      Hi!

Curves is one of the largest exercise for woman studios and IMHO the best. It is based on circuit training, which is based on strength training. Call and make an appointment at the Curves nearest you and go in and try the machines etc. I swear by Curves as it was the major catalyst for my Atkins success. They are not like Weight Watchers as it is for exercise, although they do offer a weight loss program (very similiar to Atkins). I always tell everyone two things.... You get out of Curves exactly what you put into Curves and it works, but only if you work it!
Again, it is based on strength training which is one of the best ways to increase your metabolism. The circuit is great and goes very very fast, hence you do not feel like you are spending hours working out, again, it only takes 30 minutes three times a week to get in shape at Curves. But, I will stress you HAVE to work it and work it hard!
OMG... do I sound like a Curves commercial! I honestly believe in it and love it though!!!!!
ok, so you know. I started out here 2 years ago.... unfit and fat. I am now a fitness instructor and am running some of the diet groups at the Curves I work at. I LOVE IT!!!!! Fun, Fast,Fitness!
      did that help??

If you are interested in seeing many of the machines at Curves, here is a link to them.

And a big ditto to what Bren said. I've been going to Curves for just over a month and have enjoyed both the exercise and the commeraderie with the other women I've met at my Curves.

Just curious .. what does Curves cost? Do you have to join long-term or can you pay by the month?

There's one not far from my home and I've always been tempted to stop in and check it out.

I just want to agree with everybody. Curves is fantastic! I never exercised a day in my life, but forced myself to check out Curves. I joined immediately! I go 5 times per week cuz i just GOTTA get this weight off!

I'm sure the cost varies per state location. They have sign up specials often. You can sign up for 3 or six months or a year. I signed up for 3 months, but will be extending it, I'm sure.

Please check it out. You'll be glad you did!! :nod

I go to Curves three times a week as well. It costs me $39/mo on the annual plan so that's about $3 a visit, but I know it is different in other areas. I love it and continue to find it a challenge as long as I keep working it harder when it seems to get too easy. Now that the rain has stopped, I've even started walking the mile to Curves rather than getting in my car and driving.

There are several different plans available at Curves and most of the time there is some special going on. Right now we are doing 50% off. I thought Canada was $39.00 per month. Most of my members work out for $29.00 per month. I belonged to Curves for 2 years before I started working there and I consider it one of the best investments I ever made in myself. :nod

Well unfortunately one of the benfits of living in the San Francisco area is higher prices, so it's $39 here along with $3.00/gallon gas prices. But $39 is still a deal as far as I'm concerned.

Weigh to go!!!!!!!! I thought California might be higher, as with a few other states. BUT....... You sound so committed.... Pat yourself on the back!!!!!!! :clapping

Funny, three years ago I thought nothing of spending money on the worst possible things! I look back now and wonder just how much a pound of donuts cost! I consider Curves an investment in myself and my future. And the future looks pretty good now!

Invest in yourself..... your all worth it!!!! :nod :nod

I second that, Bren! But i have a question about Curves. There seems to be some debate about how often to go. The book and standard line seems to be every other day, but many of the members go everyday thinking they are getting more benefit. What's the real scoop from an insider?

If you go everyday ask one of the "Curvettes" to show you how to adapt your work out for the second day. IF you have maxed out your muscles on the day before, you will not be able to do a max workout the following day. Do the best you can and try to get a more cardio that day. Muscle groups take a full 48 hours to recover from vigorous strength training, so day 2 should be more cardio. In all honesty though I see very few members really max out their muscle groups! :no
MAKE SURE YOU STRETCH AFTER YOUR WORK OUT! Did you know that stretching after your Curves work out increases your strength training by up to 19%? Cool hugh!!! :nod

No I didn't know that about the stretching. I tend to skip that part and get back to work since I do yoga at other times of the day and week. But I guess you are saying it is important to do all the stretching right after the strength training right?

                            Thanks for the tip.
