  • Resting Heart Rate

To those of you who have been exercising for a very long time, I'm curious as to how its affected your RHR??

I know when I was out of shape and not exercising, my RHR was like 90ish?? Now, as I'm sitting here in the chair, its 68. I'd be willing to guess its in the upper 50s to low 60s when I'm sleeping.

That's an amazing statistic, to think you can make your heart rate go down and pump more efficiently with less effort just by committing yourself to disciplined regular cardiovascular exercise!! :yes

mine dropped 12 after a yr of working out and doing Atkins.

Just think that is beats your heart is not working and you can tack them on later in life when your heart would have been wornout! :nod

I don't know what mine was before regular exercise, but it's around 60 now. Is that too low? I've measure on several occasions and it's always right around 60, and never over 64.
I wish my family would pick up some regular exercise habits, they don't even have to do Atkins, just get up and move.

That's great, a RHR in the 60s!! WOW!! That means that your heart is beating efficiently and with less effort and like 2big says, its preserving itself for down the road!

        Ain't exercise grand??? WOOHOO!!

I was reading the Consumer Reports Health Guide publication. They recommended to take your resting pulse immediately after you wake up in the morning, provided you aren't startled awake.

Mines in the mid 50's. was in the low to mid 60's when i first started to run. Even when i was out of shape and a smoker it was in the mid to high 60's which is very unusual (but a good thing!)

Sitting here at the key-board mine is 64.

Last year I had surgery on my foot, a very minor procedure hence it was done under an IV drip. In the recovery room I keept dozing off and each time I did I set off the alarms on my monitors.

Finally, after it happened for the third time, the nurse came to my bed, glared at me, and asked, "Do you run or something?" I responded, "Yes".

Then she said, "Well, we will fix that", and turned down the threshold on the pulse monitor to 40.

Nary a peep was heard from the machine after that!

That's pretty funny. I've never considered that a side effect to regular exercise. And I'm glad to hear that your surgery hasn't slowed you down too much. I bet those days spent waiting till you could run again were really long.

                      Yes it was.

It's amazing how slowly your feet heal. Of course the fact that the nurse who removed the stitches left two in and the incision would not heal and would not heal, until in frustration I started to dig in there and low and behold.....what did I find.......surgical sutures! :yikes

Needless to say my foot healed up really fast after I pulled them out!

The pathetic part of all of this is, as the nurse was removing the sutures she was ******** and moaning about how unfair it was that the government was now "forcing nurses to take refresher courses to keep their registration current". (O.K. let's remain 20 years behind new medical and patient care developments.). Maybe the government needed to insist on VISION testing instead!!!!!!!!!!
