  • Cool Running for the week of May 15, 2005

Here it is .. the new thread!!

Good luck to all of us in achieving/surpassing our goals for the week!!

I'm so excited that the new walking/jogging/running club I started at my office will have its official KICKOFF on Tuesday at 11:45!! We've set a 2.5 mile course and everyone can do it at their own pace. Now that summer is approaching here in west central FL, it will be HOT, so we want people to take it slow. Of course there will be running fools like me who refuse to give in to the heat!! :joy My goal will be to do the route twice, three times a week along with the running I do at home, to maintain my 35 mile a week goal. We'll see!!

Have a great running week everyone and STAY HYDRATED!

I did my 5k brisk walk this morning, and next week I'll incorporate some running into it again.
Wow, TOM took a whole week away from me...all I did was go to work, eat(proper foods though), sleep and rest on the couch...I did do my walking though, but other than that I was exhausted for no other reason than TOM.
I feel MUCH better yesterday and today, back to myself again, so I'll be up to the running next week.

Ok you guys, I'm in finally! Got my new orthotics, the knee and pelvis are feeling great so I'm ready to get back at it. Before all this I was running 5K three times a week for about...ohh....three weeks I think after going through the Couch to 5K program. Even though I'd like to jump right back in, I'm going to start at the beginning of that program again and I'm going to start on the treadmill. Depending on weather, I'll probably be mixing it up inside and out but I think for my first week I'll stay indoors. Man, I think it's been about two months, maybe more since I wrecked myself. Well, I'm still wrecked on my upper body (bruised first and second rib, torn deltoid, ruptured bursa in the shoulder and something with my neck). So even though I can get back running, I haven't been able to swim, cycle or do upper body weights in the last two weeks! As my chiropractor said to me, he'd rather help heal injuries caused by activity than by inactivity. I suppose that was meant to comfort me! So, my running regime will be three times per week, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Hey Betty, the running club sounds cool. I used to run at noon when I worked and it was so refreshing to get out into the fresh air. My workplace also had the policy, unwritten, that your lunch break was 30 minutes, however, it you went running you could take 90 minutes! If more workplaces were like that maybe we could reverse the obesity in this country.

Got out for a +4mile run this morning in 50 minutes. HR was 137 beats, speed 4.9mph, but the 79% humidity though was awful. Our morning temps are now in the mid-50's, perfect running weather.

I ordered a hydration fanny pack and some new running shorts from Campmor. I do not like the leg muscle cramps I'm getting toward the end of my run and am thinking it is from dehydration---am I correct?

I'll be running tomorrow and then out to U of IL till the 24th.

To Llanddewi Brefi, wearing a pink T-shirt...

Ran/walked 5k yesterday, at first light, along the race route to get me used to running along it. I've 'met up' with the organiser and a couple of other runners on the runnersworld site and it turns out we're all being issued with pink T-shirts and we're supposed to wear them *during* the race. I've just gone out and bought myself a sleeveless cool-max top in an attempt to keep myself from over-heating - I hope they don't mind if I waddle along in that and not don the pink-thing till later.

So are there any other UK Atkineers out there who want to run/waddle to Llanddewi Brefi with me in two weeks time wearing a pink T-shirt?

I couldn't post this yesterday due to a problem with a keyboard.

                Bike Ride
                Distance: 31.884 miles
                Average: speed 10.4 mph
                Time: 2:58:02

It was cold yesterday morning with 17 mph winds. Brrr! I don't think I dressed right but I heard that it's best to underdress than to wear too many clothes. Anyway, once I got started and it got later, I warmed up and even broke a sweat.

Hi everyone, sweaty greetings to you all! :wave

Just finished 8 grueling miles in this early summer sun. Oh man, just think, Betty....only 4 more months of 90+ degree running.. ensive

Anyway, I finished it in an hour and 40 minutes. Came frightfully close to my first GATOR ENCOUNTER .. he was lurking on the shore right along the edge of a pond by my sidewalk route ... needless to say my HR shot up about 20 bpm when we exchanged glances ... I took no chances coming back the same way .. walking FAR FROM THE EDGE of the pond. Ah, the critters here in the swamp!!

Esther, enjoy that pink t-shirt .. girlie, when you start running more and more races, you will have SUPPLY of tshirts .. Mine are all huge on me now as they typically only come in med or large .. but someone once suggested making a quilt with them which I might eventually do .. a nice remembrance of the races I've been in. I'd guess I have roughly around 30 tshirts stockpiled by now and more on the way. I'll be doing a 5k this weekend and a midnight 10k on July 4th along the beach which I did last year. That was so much fun. And of course, the MAIN EVENT will be my first half marathon next January!!! WOOHOO!! Forget the quilt on that one .. I'll have the whole thing FRAMED!!

Gotta go take a dip in the pool .. er, bathtub, and cool myself off.

Lifted weights today for 45 minutes intensely did al 5 upper body muscle groups and went up to 80 lbs on everything. I have lost a bit of strength but, it'll come back. I was sweating like crazy and it felt good to do it again.

                        Running tomorrow YAY.

Hi everyone! I started running tonight. I started with week two of Couch to 5k. I really wanted to do more, but since it's been almost three months of no running, I'm being good. It felt great even though it was a 25 minute cycle of walking for two minutes, running for 90 seconds. I did my BFL lifting yesterday and will again tomorrow. I'm swimming in the morning tomorrow too before work. Back to running on Thursday!

                            YIKES on the gator, Betty!!
The only thing I've had to dodge on my route was a garter snake! :yikes

I walked/ran my 5k today and I feel really good about extending my route and not being so militant over how much of it I run. I just ran when I felt comfortable, and walked when it felt right and that seemed to feel really natural. I'm going to let my body tell me what part of it to run instead of laying down the law in iron clad rules and then starting to resent the limits I've set.

                            Well....that's the theory anyway...lol

It was vote day here in B.C. and our polling station was at the Rec Center a few blocks away. They renovated last year and their pool is now salt water, and they have two floors of gym equipment. I have 10 visit pass that's about 4 years old and I was happy to hear that it's still valid!
I asked about the weight room and a staff member showed me around both the weight room and the pool. All the staff were really friendly and helpful, and no doubt I'll be in there using up my passes very soon.

I'm thinking about running mon/wed/fri and doing gym & swim on tues/thurs...how does that sound?

I really love this thread - everyone seems to be progressing brilliantly and really happy about their progress!

I ran/walked 3 miles yesterday and 2 miles today. My performance really suffers if I run 2 days in a row though, and I had loads of walk breaks today. I also found a 5k race only 2 days before my 10k, so I'm going to enter that one as a practice run. At least I have some hope of running most of a 5k and hopefully as its a bit further from home I won't know so many people and can sink into obscurity a bit more. No pink T-shirts for this one though :nono

My house was getting emptier and emptier getting the last stuff packed up ready for emigrating, but today the people who are going to rent our house turned up with a lorry load of furniture for us to store for the next couple of weeks. The driver was in a hurry and had to just unload the stuff onto the road before driving off, and the man who's renting off us promptly pulled a muscle, so I had a brilliant work-out carrying all their furniture in and attempting to stack it all in my living room.

Not long now till I have to pack the computer up and then I won't be able to talk to you guys until I'm out there running in the hot sun and smelling the orange blossom like Betty does ensive Don't worry - I won't pack it away till I've bored you all to tears with race-day tales and piccies of the new t-shirt!
