Elizellen mentioned Callanetics in another thread.

I have to make a plug for this. I have done only 1 hour of the CallaneticsEvolution and one of the Callanetics 10 Years Younger in 10 hours and I am hooked. This is seriously pulling me 'in.' I can raise my arms and see a little definition on the sides of my abs... even WITH the belly fat I still have on the front. My muscles at the base of my lower back? where your thumbs rest if you put hands on hips? are firm even when I am not tensing. I finish feeling more limber and energized.

I also read the books, the original Callanetics book and the Callanetics for the Back book. I highly recommend both. This is an old program from the 80's but the results are exquisite.

A couple of the exercises on the '10 in 10' are downright brutal, but you won't hurt anything, it is very controlled movements sustained for long intervals to work you deep. I got my materials at Amazon except for the 'Back' book which I found in a used bookstore.

Callanetics is meant to reshape the body. Here I am after 4 hours of callanetics. I have technically done 5 but I don't think I should count the first one as my 'form' was terrible! It is making my thighs sleeker and my butt is lifting.

      Hi 'Momto'

I have what I think is the original Callenetics book, but I have always been put off trying it because the exercises seem to focus on having a kind of bar to hold on to. I don't have anything at the right height - I did try a chair once but that didn't really work. I could accept not 'hanging from the wall bars' to stretch the spine, which is also in my book, but once I took out the exercises with the bar there didnt seem to be much left! Do the books you are working from have a more varied range of exercises? If so I think I'll keep an eye open for them.

I always found the before/after piccies in the book quite fantastic, and you can really see a difference in yours - after 4 hours that is quite amazing to get the 'cheek lift,' if you get my drift! You are inspiring me to give it a go.

        Re: Callanetics

I am also participating in a thread with a couple of callanetics teachers (Actually the 'leader' in the CallaneticsEvolution dvd) in another site. She instructed us that the exercises that target the buttocks with the barre, (the ones where you hold on and pulse leg backwards) can also be done leaning on a forearm just as effectively. The original is over 20 years old, still great! but there are modifications you can do. For the exercise where you need to place a leg on a bar, you can use a chair, end table, the arm of a sofa, whatever has a height that works for you.

In the more modern Callanetics Evolution, more of the 'bun' exercises are in the standing position. I am about to post pics of my teenagers belly, she lost a little 'pooch' in just 4 hours!

You can see a little reshaping in her bum, but her big results are in her tummy, and she stands taller too. She is not sucking her tummy in either, this is the real deal. Don't ever tell her I posted these, she is 16 and would be mortified!

Right, I'm convinced - I'll hunt the book out again, and look for the newer ones as well. The difference in your daughter's pics are quite incredible aren't they?

          Thanks for the info
