Does anybody know of a good treadmill to purchase (preferably under 1000$)? I'm so confused by all of it and think that I would like the iFit thing, but am not sure...
I don't know one brand from another. I would go to a place that sells them and check them out.
What things would you like on a treadmill, variable speeds is probably a given, hills, cardio?

Go to treadmill doctor.com and compare what's available. Mine cost me $1700, but it's been worth every penny: wider belt, longer belt, quiet motor, more power.
I recently purchased a Proform 980-CS. It is perfect for jogging/running and walking. It is really nice, you can play music from your I-pod from the speakers, and it also has a fan. I would recommend this brand. I paid about 750 for it.
I was looking at treadmills too since gym treadmills are always full at the times that I'm there.
I like the X4 or X5 by Nordictrack. These are incline/decline trainers that will go up to 30%+ incline and decline -3% so you get a good workout just walking. It simulates a hike. It does have a shorter belt but worth a try. You can check one out at Sears. I ran on it just fine but I'm only 5'4". I think the X5 in $1600 rt now.
I do strictly walking for cardio & have a Pro-Form 755. The Pro-Form I had before it that lasted many years. Not sure as to how my treadmill would fare with running and sprinting, though - but I love it.
