    Re: Overweight 13 year old

OH, and I feed my kids high-protein snacks and "good carbs" during the day. they've slimmed, but not so much so that their spleens are going to fall out. I very carefully monitor them. With hyperglycemia running in the family and Native American blood, I have to very carefully watch their food intakes.

      Cleo,

Do they mind the good carbs and high protein snacks or have they become used to them? I want to have a baby (thus the ID name) and I want to teach him/her healthy habits from the start. That is why I am doing this before I have a baby so I can lead by example and give my little one a solid lead in life... I owe it to them for giving them the "fat gene". I was just wondering, do you think they would mind if they never ate the other stuff at all? I mean, what they don't know can't add to their desire, right?

        Hi, Deb!

        Cleo,

Do they mind the good carbs and high protein snacks or have they become used to them?
I started small. String cheese. Hard-boiled eggs. Devilled eggs. Pepperoni. Bacon. High-fat milk. They were amazed that they started to feel satisfied and didn't miss the cheesie doodles that kept them starving and hyper.

I was just wondering, do you think they would mind if they never ate the other stuff at all? I mean, what they don't know can't add to their desire, right?
I concur. You will pass on any blood sugar problems you have to your kids more likely than not. And they'll never miss the sugar. Sugar isn't meant to be consumed by the human body. Native Americans subsisted for thousands of years eating pemmican, berries, beef and a generally low-carb diet, and they were a lean race of people. It's too bad the Europeans never learned anything from them.

I too wish I had done something about my weight at 13...maybe I wouldn't be where I am today weight wise. I totally agree that the girl should see her pediatrician. I was a sneak eater, and I filled up on junk foods at school, too. Does she take her lunch or eat a hot lunch? Even if she takes it, if she has money she may be eating hot lunch junkfood. I agree with the others, cut off her access to junk at home. Starch addicts can become low carbers when the starch leaves the house!!!
