Does anyone else try to eat mostly organic foods? It's more expensive, but I think (hope) it's worth it for my health. I also try to get wild caught fish (lower mercury levels), and meat that was raised without hormones and antibiotics. I try to buy dairy that is from cows that aren't treated with hormones and antibiotics also. As much as possible, I try to buy from local farmers, instead of chain markets. I'd rather support small businesses, than publicly traded enterprises. I guess some of it is political for me, and some is for health reasons. How about you? Do you try to eat organic?

I try to buy meat that's free range. But I also tend to buy things that are locally grown too or I try to grow it myself---that way I KNOW pesticides and other things weren't used on them and I KNOW it's the absolutely fresh when I eat it(I mean it's hard to beat a veggie that went from the garden to the table in 10 minutes).~Megs~

I buy organic when I can. Thankfully, I live near several Whole Foods, a Trader Joe's, and we have great farmers' markets. It is expensive to eat this way, but very much worth it.Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it. -Samuel Clemens

When I lived near detroit, we had a great amish market, where I got fresh butter, made by people, not machines, that was made from cows who were not treated with hormones or antibiotics. Much better than anything from the supermarket. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find anything like that where I live now.
I also shopped there for lamb, beef, chicken, all natural and organic, eggs, bacon, dairy, yogurt, etc. It wasn't any more expensive than the grocery store. I miss that place

I bet you do miss that place! That butter sounds awesome.
I was reading in the Readers Digest that organic ketchup has a lot more lycopine in it than regular ketchup so its much better for you if you are a ketchup eater.

I buy organic whenever possible. I buy milk only from the local dairy, veggies from a farmer's market, meat only from certified grass-fed cattle. I buy kosher cheese and kosher processed meat as well.
Yes, I spend a lot of money, but my family isn't being pumped full of hormones, pesticides and antibiotics.

I can't eat kosher meat, do you know the way they slaughter the animals to make the meat kosher? I don't think it makes it healthier than regular meat, they bleed the animals to death! Why would that make the meat better?

Oh. I think I'd just buy organic free range meat, they sell it at Whole Foods here, kinda pricey but its really good and it also dosen't have any of that funky stuff that regular grocery store meat has
Its a personal thing though, I saw those movies "Faces of Death" and they showed a Kosher slaughter house, not pretty, not pretty at all. The sheep are hung upside down by a rope around their back legs, then they slit their throats, they scream in agony and kick around while the blood gushes out of them. It's pretty bad.

I had the chance to watch that movie... terrific & terrifying.
I try to buy mostly organic when I can afford it, since I am sensitive to so much stuff and I don't want those pesticides inside my body or in the world. Just read that in the US about 1 million tons of pesticides a year are used...

Two thoughts:
1. Wild caught fish being lower in Mercury. I would hunt for a study on this comment. I fish quite often, and do a lot of grilled fish, and I generally ascribe to the idea that wild animal protein is better than farm-raised. That being said, I just have to ask why a farm would increase mercury rates in their fish? Having lived near several plants, and near the Ohio river, we were advised specifically NOT to eat certain wild fish (specifically catfish, white bass "rockfish", and a few other bottom runners).
2. And forgive me if I'm insulting, I don't mean to be...are they Amish or Mennonite? I believe that some of the Mennonite farmers around our area aren't opposed to antibiotics. They don't go purchase growth hormones that I'm aware of, but they will vaccinate the cattle. It might be worth it to ask that question of the farming family.
Just want to make sure you're getting what you are paying for as much as possible.
