  • Allergic reaction related to low carb bars/snacks? Anyone?

I have had this awful reaction for over a year now. It comes and goes. My skin will itch, I will scratch just a little and welts appear. Sometimes when it is bad, the welts will not only be in bumps, but in streaks where my fingernails ran along my skin. It also happens when something rubs against my skin, such as when I carry in lots of full plastic grocery bags over my arms...same reaction, or even a tight pair of jeans across the waistband.

For a long time I thought it might be peanut butter because I sometimes snack on a spoonful. Cutting that out didnt change things. Nor did changing hair shampoo, soap or laundry detergent. I tried lots of things, then it dawned on me.

It seems to happen when I eat low carb snacks that have sugar alcohols in them. Particularly the bars and my all time favorite Dryers Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.

I am relatively sure it is this...and while someone else chiming in with the same reactions wont change anything for me, I guess I am just wanting to know if I am alone in this. Or even, if someone else has been having the same issues, perhaps this could clue them into a possible solution.

I have been doing low carb for over 2 years now and feel absolutely great. The last couple months I have gained about 5 lbs back though, because I have gotten really lazy regarding exercise, and I do eat more fruit now...oh, and from time to time I have small amounts of "forbidden" foods.

I figure though, that I am in this for a lifetime, so some treats are fine, and generally I do very well with staying away from carbs. I don't eat bread, rice or pasta at all. It is the sweet stuff that gets me each and every time.

I have started watching it closer, and I swear I am going to start exercising again! heh

Oh, and the irony to all of this? I had completely lost my sweet tooth eating low carb ...until I began munching on those damn low carb bars and chocolate. errrrrrr.
Admitting...on April 2010 I have been eating low carb for almost 7 years and the lowest I got to was 145. These last couple of years though I got lazy, and over the course of time, gained back up to almost 170. I am back on induction, a week into it now on 4/22/10, doing excellent and seeing results. Once again, my weight goal is 140.

I just don't have the heart to change the stats below, except I am NOW 46yrs.

check your ingredients lists and see what is the same in all of them for me it was the soy and my reation is much worse then just a bit of red itchy skin from tight stuff although that is an initial reaction for a type 3 allergy reaction. if you continue to consume them your reaction will get worse as your immune system gets more and more sensitive to them

I can eat Tofu and other soy products. The common theme for me seems to be the Malitol, or however you spell it. I have seen it spelled several different ways. Mallitol, Maltitol, etc.

I am not 100% sure of it, but that seems to be the likeliest cause.

See your physician. What you describe might not be a food related condition.
