I really think that drinking diet cokes is detramental to weight loss and should be included on the NOT ALLOWED list. So, I am taking a poll to see what your thoughts are.

    Re: Diet Cola's

I agree that all coke products are addicting - even the diet coke with splenda. I've noticed this in myself - every time I drink diet coke i feel the need to have more and on and on. Other diet drinks sweetened with splenda, like diet shasta or diet rite seem to help me when I'm trying to wean myself off of diet coke. I drink these whenever I feel the need when i'm coming off of the D Coke addiction then pretty soon i forget to even have it as it is easier to switch to tea, then water. So, I don't agree that ALL Colas should be restricted, but I do agree that diet coke and maybe pepsi products should be off limits as I find the same problem with Diet Dr Pepper.

      Re: Diet Cola's

      This is my personal opinion:

My answer would be "Yes for some, no for others".

While caffeine is addicting, Diet Coke minus caffeine isn't, necessarily. Diet Coke/aspartame/splenda doesn't stall everyone, but it does some. I think there should always be prudence when drinking something that could cause blood sugar spikes, cravings or weight loss stalls. For me, aspartame causes cravings; for others, it doesn't. For some, splenda causes stalls; for others, it doesn't. For sonme, aspartame causes stalls; it doesn't for others.

Really, diet beverages are not water and should be used sparingly, or at the user's own risk, with full knowledge that stalls, cravings, blood sugar spikes or other health issues may result with continued use of said products.

It's definitely a case of what works for some doesn't for others, so I could not answer the poll.

        Re: Diet Cola's

I think that Diet Coke (and other diet sodas) should not necessarily be banned. Many different food items can cause stalling for certain people. I like the fact that this diet is an experiment with food. You learn a lot more about your body on this diet. Although diet drinks have not stalled me, I do use them sparingly. I acknowledge the fact that many others can stall or get cravings using these products (kind of like how soy nuts beat me down for a few days). I think that diet drinks should not be banned altogether but should be used with caution. If you find that they make you stall stay away from them. I had to do this with sugar alcohol and soy nuts.

I do enjoy having diet soda though...

I am so lucky that I naturally stay away from soda, and everything carbonated. I'm not so good with addiction!

My ex-boyfriend used to say that the only thing that kept him sane on Atkins was his Diet Pepsi, and he never seemed to have a problem. It seems like it needs to be taken on a case by case basis.

Here is a good tip for those who are fighting a soda addiction: try to limit yourself to two to three a day. If you MUST drink another, you have to borrow TWO from your future consumption to have one today. This is a technique that has worked very well with friends of mine who are trying to cut back.

I think it is like any other food IF thre ingredients on the label are acceptable then it should be allowed. caffeine and sweetners other then Splenda are the issues not diet sodas them selves. Just as some mustards and some mayos are acceptable we don't ban all because some have honey or sugasr or other not acceptable stuf I ddin't list.

Well my friend drinks a sugar free (and carb free ) Tropicana orange ade. Its not carbonated with no caffiene and it aided her to loose 90 pounds. LOL it taste like tang! I also know someone who drank the diet sodas mt. dew and lost 40. I've found that I can't do the diet sodas because of the aspartame causing headaches. It obviously depends on what works for that particular person. My friend Mandy ,who lost the 90 pounds , says without her drink she wouldn't have made it. I think it's best to give the most options so people can make it.

                  Re: Diet Cola's

Aside from the artificial sweeteners, cola drinks contain phosphoric acid which LEECHES calciuim from your bones ... for me, that's a major concern since I am highly susceptible to osteoporosis .. I'll stick with bottled water! Although I do enjoy an occasional Sprite Zero which has no phosphoric acid.

                  from www.nutrition.org:

An example of a food product that yields high levels of acid for the body to dispose of is a cola drink. Phosphoric acid is one of the ingredients listed on the cola container. The pH of cola is ~3.0, ranging from 2.8 to 3.2. The human kidney can excrete urine with a pH no lower than 5. If one ingests and fully absorbs a beverage with a pH of 3, one has to dilute it 100-fold to achieve a urinary pH of 5. Thus, a can containing 330 mL of cola would result in 33 L of urine! This does not happen because the body buffers the acid of the soft drink. For full buffering, 1 L of cola requires some four tablets of Tums, which contain 16 mEq of carbonate as the calcium salt.

                      Re: Diet Cola's

Diet colas do not only contain phosphoric acid (thanks Betty for reminding me) but citirc acid which is bad for tooth enamel and bones, too. Basically, these soft drinks are flavored acidic water with added sweeteners. I do enjoy a coke light now and then, although there are no splenda-sweetenede drinks over here, when I need the caffeine boost, but I am detoxing of that stuff and changing to (iced) green tea.

Reading the labels should really do the trick...

                        Re: Diet Cola's

Here in Australia, Diet Coke and Sprite Zero contain aspartamine.
There is no choice with splenda.

I've recently (last 24 hours) confirmed that I am now really sensitive to diet coke. I never used to be!

I used to get the odd headache after Diet coke and Sprite Zero and think nothing of it - I thought I was dehydrated.

But now Diet Coke has the unfortunate effect of giving me severe diarrhea!

Now I have been reading up on aspartamine! Damn that stuff is not good! It also shows how a political decision in a foreign country (where I have no rights, no say, no vote) affects my health! That's globalism for you!

Personally I try to keep away from diet pop as much as I can. I was addicted to diet pepsi at one time and it took me a long time to get myself away from that addiction. Now I prefer plain cold water...bottled or from the tap.

Sprite Zero does have nutrasweet (aspartame), but it never causes me to feel hungry like other diet sodas do. Wonder why? Anyway, I don't have it often, but occasionally, I enjoy one.
