    Yoga and Back Pain

A little bit of stretching can go a long way to easing low back pain, according to a new study.

Researchers followed more than 100 people with low back pain. One group attended a weekly yoga class, the second focused on aerobic and strengthening exercises, and the third read a self-care book on back pain.

After 12 weeks, patients in the yoga group reported better back function. At 26 weeks, they also reported less pain.

The study is in December's Annals of Internal Medicine.
I saw this on the news and thought of you.

Yoga is terrific for my back pain!

I was in a horrific auto accident when I was 20 years old (which was just last month ). Luckily nothing was borken, but I began having a "nagging" ache shortly afterward. It wasn't so bad that I couldn't do things like walk, but if I stood for a long period of time or if I sat upright for a long period of time, one spot would begin to ache, and that ache would spread to my shoulders and neck.

The thing that helped was osteopathic manual therapy. But due to my schedule, I couldn't go "as needed" as much as I would have liked to go. So, shortly after I began Atkins, I began yoga.

While I still see my osteopath every month, the yoga has helped for the between visit time. And my doctor has said he's noticed an improvement in my posture and in my problem.

            typo.

I tried pilates but couldn't do it because it made my back hurt. My back problem is localized to the left side of my back, per my doc my "thorasic vertebrae 7-10 and lumbar vertebrae 4 and 5". So it's the part of my back where my lower ribcage is and at the junction of my hip and spine.

Leslie, of WATP fame has a easy, doable yoga video that I use every once in a while.

Re: Hey Chris, Yoga might help!!!

Lynn, I started with a tape I bought during PBS Pledge week called "Yoga for the Rest of Us". It's a modified yoga program for people who are elderly or people with special needs (like my chronic back pain). It goes through 3 segments: stretches, yoga poses (5 poses) plus the Sun Salutation, and the cool down. It's very good for a beginner because you use a chair to help support you during the poses.

I didn't realize how inflexible and how poor my balance and coordination were. But I improved and my back felt better--stronger. Anyhow, I did the tape daily for a couple of months then I moved on doing my own workout with the "Yoga Deck" cards.

Eventhough my back is stronger and I'm more flexible, I still can't do pilates because my lower back needs alot of support to do the pilates exercises. So, I've stuck with yoga.
