Health Benefits of Almonds
Several studies published and presented in 2005 have provided more insight into almonds’ important heart-health benefits and potential impact on weight maintenance. When it comes to lowering cholesterol or c-reactive protein, providing satiety, or increasing the level of vitamin E in the blood, a daily handful of almonds appears to be one of the smartest snacks around.
A study published last month in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) adds to the evidence for almonds’ role in help ing lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University studied the effect of changing the amount of carbohydrates, protein and unsaturated fat in the diet on blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Almonds were eaten as a snack in a protein diet and an unsaturated fat diet, but not included in a carbohyd rate diet. The researchers discovered that the protein and unsaturated fat diets improved blood pressure and LDL, or ”bad,” cholesterol and total cholesterol levels m ore than the carbohydrate diet did.
thinking they did a high pro no almonds and a high unsaturated fat no almonds to compare I checked the artical in JAMA to get the proof ( sorry can't link y'all)and guess what? Nope not an almond testing study at all, not even close to the actual hypothesis the docs were testing for.which was a comparison of these diets and their effect on cholesterol and blood pressure
the almond growers drew the conclusion because almonds were used in the high pro and the high fat but not the carbs yep almonds did it.
but what shocked me was (remember these are Harvard and John Hopkins scientist running this experiemnts)
Looks like they just proved what Dr Atkins has been saying about the carbs lower them and cholesterol gets beter. they said monosaturated because they could only conclude that because that was the fat they added to ther higher fat diet. they didn't take the carbs as low as Dr Atkins nor the proteins nor fats as high as he did
even the american Heart Association thought lowering the carbs and upping the others was good http://www.americanheart.org/present...tifier=3035989
looks like almonds need more study and better reading skills though

A diet rich in carbohydrates; a diet rich in protein, about half from plant sources; and a diet rich in unsaturated fat, predominantly monounsaturated fat.
but what shocked me was (remember these are Harvard and John Hopkins scientist running this experiemnts)
Conclusion In the setting of a healthful diet, partial substitution of carbohydrate with either protein or monounsaturated fat can further lower blood pressure, improve lipid levels, and reduce estimated cardiovascular risk.
