Anyone have an answer for this? All my labs improved while on atkins except my Uric acid. My doctor has talked about putting me on medication for this. I know low carb is the way for me but I don't want more medicine! Thanks

Uric acid needs to come down for your health. if it takes meds to lower yours then you need them. Did your doc explain what was going on inside your body with the level that high? Did you discuss eating habits?
high uric acid is from not handling the purine purine break down in the body. if could be from too many cells being deystoyed to fast or not clearing it in the kidneys your doc will see which you have. It can be genetic or have a correctable cause but your doc will know that. Some meds have side effects that couse it too.

this can lead to crystylzation in your joints (gout) and kidney damage

Foods that are high in purine content are organ meat, sardines, anchovies,Peas. lentils, beans,Shellfish, fish roe scallops, and large amounts of red meat. Alcohol also plays a factor in it..

How about the veggies? if you only get it eating the higher protein in Atkins low carb chances are it is from gout but your doc will know your kidneys better then any of us will.

Talk with him and do some checking up on gout.

It very easily could be the diuretic effect that Atkins makes happen. When I had high bp, my doctor put me on a diuretic. Prior to that my uric acid levels were fine. About 2 months later I had my first gout attack. Oral steroids took care of it, but a couple of months later I had another one. They switched diuretics and I haven't had a problem with my uric acid levels since. Now I'm off those too, but I just wanted to let you know that it very well could be diet related. You should definitely get it checked out to make sure it's not something else, but it surely wouldn't surprise me to see a spike in uric acid levels, especially during the early stages of Atkins. I would think it would level out though.

there are blood pressure meds that interfer with the purine processing but your doc should know about that already.

Unfortunately, Atkins will raise your uric acid levels (DANDR p111-112). The most important thing is to keep your water intake up. Dr. Atkins recommends you ask you doctor about Allopurinol.

Dr. Atkins also recommends certain vita-nutrients in his book Dr. Atkins' Vita-nutrient Solution. Unfortunately I don't have a copy so I don't know what those vita-nutrients are.

Also, be very careful of low-carb products. Most of them use soy which is a high purine food.

                Re: High Uric acid labs

I can't remember all the figures any more but my uric acid levels were really high when I started Atkins and my doctor wanted me to go on medications. He gave me 2 months to get them under control. I carried on with Atkins, walked 2 miles a day (nothing strenuous as this may make matters worse), ate 20 cherries with cream for breakfast (its the cherries for uric acid, and the cream to make them special!), took loads of antioxidants (1g vitamin c, 400micrograms E, selenium, and another one whose name escapes me at the moment - I'll edit this when I find out...), took a teaspoon of celery seed daily, and kept my carbs down to around 30 grams a day. After the 2 months were up, my uric acid levels were on the low side of normal and my doctor was impressed! I'm not sure which of these things was the most important, but it was a good excuse to eat cherries every day...
