I found this page interesting. Looks like the food pyramid is undergoing some transformation.

About bloody time! But look, it still says (down the bottom) whole grain foods at most meals. Aaaargghh! And use butter sparingly! I give up!

That's a bit different to the Aussie one.

What I don't understand in the American one is why they want you consume more grass seeds (grains) than veggies ????????

Even in Weight Watchers they make veggies zero points, but you have to count your grass.

And why is exercise at the bottom ? *groan* That's got nothing to do with food! Any why is that bigger than everything else ? Should we burn more than we intake, won't we starve to death that way ? What about people on maintenance - ridiculous!

Well, change often is slow especially when youdo not want to admit defeat. At least it is whole grains this time. I was a bit curious about the placement of butter and the oils. I figured they would have been on the same level.

So what does the Aussie one look like?

How about butter at every meal and grains sparingly??

              Re: Food Pyramid

Actually, this pyramid really DOES make sense - even where they put the grains. A generally healthy and active person who is at their ideal weight would need the energy from the carbs that are found in whole grains. It could be that if a person is as active as they should be, that it would be hard to eat as many veggies as it would take to have the net carb count high enough so that person is not burning off more fat that they really don't need to lose. I really like the way that they share that level with healthy fats. However, it might make more sense if they put the legumes in place of the whole grains, since "energy" was the only real reason they listed why they put grains where they did.

                Re: Food Pyramid

Why even put white rice, white bread and sweets on the food pyramid????? If brown rice and whole wheat bread were listed in the grains section people might start getting the idea that these are the types of foods to eat instead, though sparingly!!!! I also think that veggies should be below grains in the broader area!!!

                  Re: Food Pyramid

exactly Mindy I agree this is so twisted and contrary to what reality is about!!!!...I was looking at the dietary handouts for for diabetics in our teaching room at work ...OMG it is amazing how much white crap is allowed!!!

trying to tell an overweight person with insulin resistance it is "OK" to have some of these foods it like trying to tell a junky it is "ok" to have a little heroine ....

yes some people can eat sugar, rice, flour in moderation but if you are trying to get someone who is extremely overweight with out of control blood sugars to get blood sugar in control ..feeding them any sugar or white rice, flour ect is so self defeating!!!

also for kids...this pyramid is just not going to cut it ..we are bringing up the most unhealthy generation ever ..

yup get that crap off the pyramid and let's go for whole foods ....

let people choose to have a sugary thing if they want but lets not lie and say it makes for any part of a "good" diet

I like vodka! ....do I think it should be a food group or considered part of my "diet" ...or even on the pyramid ..absolutely NOT .. and neither should sugar white rice, white flour ect.....
