When I was in college, a girl who lived next door drank UNSWEETENED Unsweetened Kool-Aid. Her mom never added sugar or any other kind of sweetener to Kool-Aid, so she and her siblings got used to the taste.

My mom used to get creative with fruits, especially in the summer because she hated heating the kitchen up for baking. She used to freeze bunches of grapes, pieces of pinapple and melons. We used to eat these frozen fruits instead of popsicles (of course, we begged for popsicles and loved them as a treat!). She would also throw fruits into the blender and puree them, then freeze them in ice cube trays. Before dinner, she would plop a few cubes into dessert bowls and let them sit on the counter. By the time were were ready to eat them, they were partially thawed and were like slushies.

      sorry it's been so long

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to everyone. My son is type 1 diabetic. We took a nice long 3 hour ambulance ride to a children's hospital last Tuesday. We were released very late Thurs night. Since I don't have internet at home this was my first chance to write. I am learning a lot ...mainly that I didn't cause this (in response to my previous entry). Type 1 is insulin dependent and caused by a combination of genetics and a virus...long story and I am very short on time. Just thought I would check in. Talk to you all soon.

Sorry to hear about your son. IMHO type 1 is a real disease -- most type 2 just need to change their diet.

          better every day

Things are getting better here every day. In fact, they just adjusted his dosage again yesterday due to too many lows instead of highs for once. He is taking his shots very well and the whole family's diet has improved. They want him to have carbs (obviously) and even sugar is okay, we just limit it. When he wants a sweet snack we have tried those 100 cal packs of chips ahoy and oreo baked cracker cookie things. Thin crisps I think they are called. And we have some blue berry Quaker crisp ums. We have even tackled two birthday party's this weekend successfully. It is funny, take the sugar out of the house (the pure strong sugar: pop, candy, etc) and within a week every forgets. I have even lost some more. I am proud to say I am teetering between 179 and 181 right now. Hope you all are doing well and can't wait to hear from you.

HOTMAMMA, glad you filled us in and things sound as though they're improving, which I'm so happy to hear. And I want to say how excited I am for you that you're doing so well even with everything else going on -- Bravo!

there is nothing like the strength you summon up when your child is ill and needs you. Bravo to you for stepping up and learning how to cope with his illness, and taking care of the whole family. God bless you all!
