  • need advice, football weights

My dh and I have signed our son up for pee wee football, and our neighbor who used to be a very good friend of mine also signed her 10 year old son. Well, we were at their first practice Monday, and she happens to be on the football committee, and she mentioned there are weight limits if they weigh over 135 for midgets they can't play. The kids have until Aug 31 to lose weight for weigh ins.

So I said well Ian weighs 80 lbs, no problem. So she continued that her son needs to lose more than 20 lbs by weigh ins. So I thought my word thats an awful lot of weight to lose in 2 weeks for a 10 year old kid. And she said every year I put him on strict Atkins. I held my tongue.
She then said last year he lost the weight but, but gained it all back and an additional 12 lbs. She also said she didn't care as long as he can play football. Now this woman knew this season was coming up she should've been working with him long ago, but that's my opinion.

Her son is a sweet boy , never will he argue with other kids or make fun of anyone..a good kid. I feel I have to say something. Do you all think I should mind my own business? I just do not think this is safe at all for a ten year old. I know children shouldn't be doing strict atkin's but is short term safe? I believe she said she will keep him on for 6 weeks.

Sorry for the long post. So should I mind my business.

    Thank you, Angie

Let me get this straight... her son weighs 155+ at 10 years old? And she is just now thinking about the fact that he needs to trim down for this football, even though he had to do the same thing a year ago?

Today is the 18th for heavens sake..

Well you knew all of that. If it comes up, I would tell her it is your understanding that Dr. Atkins never intended for his diet to be used with young children without medical supervision. That discharges what little responsibility you have in this instance. Since she 'doesn't care as long as he can play' anything you say is likely to have no effect.

I hope the football is fun for the kids.. but it seems to be a little too important for you friend... maybe someone else can think of a way to help her see the light.

Wow, poor kid. There is nothing that you can do, but the next time your chatting, try to get this forum into the conversation. Maybe she will come on and get some help for both of them.

I don't think the kid wants to play or he would have been ancious to diet. He needs a good physician/dietician and a mother with some common sense.

She's yo-yo dieting her son and is setting him up for a tough time ahead if she doesn't watch it.

All weight loss diets for children should be done under the supervision of a physician, especially since children have different nutritional needs than us adults.

This is what the American Academy of Pediatrics says about safe weight loss for children. http://www.medem.com/MedLB/article_d...mp;sub_cat=382

If weight loss is the goal, set reasonable weight-loss targets (usually no more than one-half to 1 pound of lost weight per week), and monitor your child's progress.
        This quote speaks volumes, imo.

Thank you all for replying, I was thinking that even if I say anything to her she will do what she wants. She is the kind of person who has been there and done that. I did ask her why she didn't try cutting sweets out and sodas and all other junk food out a long time ago. And she just said why should I when Atkin's works for him.

Some people are so ignorant :yes

          Thanks again,

Angie, you have ALOT more patience (and overall diplomacy) than me...I would have hit the roof.
