  • breast reduction

I have been having terrible pain in my neck and shoulders and went to the doctor about it. She said I need a breast reduction but my insurace company turned me down because of my weight. Has anyone else encountered somthing similar and what did you do? I would love any help I could get. Thanks!

    Re: breast reduction

I think you should see an other doctor for a second opinion or weight until goal to make any choices like that....it is a huge serious procedure (I have seen them done and taken care of people afterwards) and this may not be the problem..if you have your breasts reduced now ..first of all what is going to happen when you loose weight? your breasts are going to go down anyway they are mostly fat tissue...
second what if the pain is a result of arthritis or a disc problem instead of your weight ...my advice is ...see another doctor...have an MRI ...
loose your weight and in the mean time ask for a referral go see a physical therapist to work on exercises to build supporting muscles to help reduce your pain.... Do not get surgery unless you are absolutely sure that is what you want to do. Why risk nerve damage, loss of sensitivity and infection ...if you can solve all this by loosing some weight?

it is a red flag that a doctor would advise breast reduction to an overweight person with out wanting you to do other stuff first ... I hate to say I think I am glad the insurance company will not pay ...

another thing is that as you loose weight your shape changes so much if you have them reduced now they may not even be where you want them to be when you do loose weight you know?

I can not believe I am actually agreeing with an insurance company

      Re: breast reduction

You may want to wait until you get to goal to see what happens. You may want to ask other members how they reacted to this cause I think I read that people lost weight/sizes on top.

Ask other people how they deal with pain. There may be a good balm/cream to help.

My sister had it. The doc told her to lose as much weight as possible before, the surgery.
SHe idid great, her main problem as the back and the neck, and that is why she did it.
She went from a size 42 to a 34, and got a pair of perfect boobs. ( can we say boobs here??)
It wasnt that hard or painful. She has never regreted her.

Eschli, what are your current stats? (Height, weight, etc?)
Weight loss will effect your breast size.
I had a doctor want to do breast reduction to relieve carpal tunnel syndrome!?
I have gone from a 44DD (which was tight!) to a 36DD with 40lbs loss, and it makes a big difference. I would still like to be a "C", but we will see if that ever happens.....

              Re: breast reduction

I must say I agree with waiting and seeing if they "shrink" during weightloss... I know mine are always the first thing to go. Before I had my second son when I was on Atkins I dropped 2 cup sizes, I'm 160ish lbs 5'6" or so just to give u an idea. Sure wish it was stomach first, breasts last.

infection ..nerve damage ...both reasons to avoid surgery unless EVERYthing else has failed.....but this is just my opinion

                  Re: breast reduction

Thank you Elenore for the reply. I know people who have done it and were also very happy. I am waiting for at least 7 months before I do have to surgery in order to lose as much weight as possible. To the rest of you thanks for the help, but I am aware that losing weight causes lose of breast size but when I was very thin and in shape I had very large breasts. Any good suggestions about how to manage the pain in the meantime? It is excruciating!

                    Re: breast reduction

I agree you should wait till you've lost the weight and see. I've always had large breasts, pain and aching back and shoulders. Since I've lost the weight, I am no longer in pain with heavy breasts. I wear normal sized bras and I no longer bump into everything and everyone with my boobs when I try to squeeze by. (lolol) <That was always so embarrassing. I've had more embarrassing moments with them than I can tell.
