          Re: fibromyalgia sufferers

Thank you Jimmie, For starting this tread and being concerned for me. I was just diagnosited with in the last three weeks and my hands fingers feet, ankles my shoulders and my neck all are swollen and sore where it hurts so much to get out of bed. My dr wont give me any pain meds he says they will just cover up the pain and it will not last for ever. He told me to walk an hour a day and go on a low carb diet, so thats what i tried doing until i was getting sick from eating so much grease. What i was wondering i have done this diet before and had no problems until this time with the food, what other cooking aids can i use so i can continue with this diet. As for walking i have been unable to do so with all the pain. But i do force my self to walk around my house more. I do have a treadmill but find that to hard and it makes me motion sick . No i am looking for anyone that suffers and has the time to help me stay on track and to help me with a meal plan. I dislike fish of all kinds what i bassically was eating was chicken and beef and pork.

If anyone would like to help please PM me.

I have been reading up on Fibro and i am starting to understand this illness but not really. I have joined two great groups that offer support, they all suggest the south beach diet not the atkins can anyone tell me the difference with the two. I know you have to pay for the SB diet over the net and i wont put my credit card out there for anyone to see.

Any help would be great thanks a bunch

good! you found your way here. a conversation would be okay in the thread too, so current and future peeps with this problem could gain some information.

i am not too familiar with SB but i think i understand it to be much like atkins without the induction phase. higher up the rungs.... i think but don't quote me on that.

and since you mentioned it............... you might want to stroll through the pages of our sister board!

I will certainly look at the sister site, i'm not to sure i want to venture on a different diet as i no how the atkins diet works and i like the fact i actually no it. I was just uncertain about the fat meaning butter and such.

I do also hope other post seeing i can use all the help i can get.

Thanks again for asking this question.

Hi everyone, I don't have a problem with fibromyalgia, but I ran across a movie on YouTube where it talks about with the introduction of Aspartame in the mid 80's the increase in fibromyalia, brain tumors, lupus, and MS.

                  Here's the link:

I see why Atkins doesn't recommend it.

                    Re: fibromyalgia sufferers

I have had fibro for years. What has helped me beyond measure is working out. And working out HARD. I find that when I am going to the gym on a regular basis all is well. I sleep well and the pain is at a minimum. When I miss the gym for more than a week (sickness or vacation) I pay for it big time.
One thing we did do is to get a temperpedic matress. I KNOW they are expensive, BUT, and it is a HUGE but, it is the only matress that I can sleep through the night on. Any other mattress and I am woken with body wracking pain over and over through the night.
Back to the working out. Walking is ok to start with, but the weight bearing exercise is what makes my pain stay in check. You will also need to do cardio at least 4 times a week. Seriously, this is the only way that I have been able to keep the pain levels down. Of course there are also a host of other benefits that go along with the exercising, but for me I look at it as my perscription for the fibro. It was one of the first things that my doc said to do for the pain.
Good luck and God bless with this.
PM me if you need to talk. I know it hurts and sucks big time, but please trust me that you can lead a relatively pain free life. The pain never truly goes away, but you can get it down to very managible levels.

still have a few more pounds to go!!

Thanks my doc told me to do the same thing but when my feet are the size of ballons literlly i can hardle put shoes on and to ware my sandles it useless because they just make my feet hurt more. I have tye bo boot camp and a 8 min ab work out and some pilates that i have been trying to do but seem to fale each time. Tonight my pain isn't that bad but i no i will pay for it tomorrow, I have been on my feet all day with little rest. I do try to keep my self busy during the day and rest at night seeing i have a 7 yr old and a 3 yr old that seem to want all my attention. I just bought a mp3 player (ipod) that i will be using to motivate my self. I know i need to work out but when i hurt i get so down and i can't seem to pull my self up and think positive.

Any suggestions on that, meaning how does one think positive when they are in pain 24-7. Right now i take two advil every 4 hours just to keep the pain at minium but day it doesn't do jack.

                          Re: fibromyalgia sufferers

fibro is one of those things you just manage it never goes all the way away. Sashsquatch had it and was taking some meds for it as was smallersizing I think. Sasquatch also did biking and running.

As to the grease there are other ways to get the fat in besides butter. pick a fatty cut of meat add a bit of olive oil to your salad, or rub your veggies before you cook them on the griill or in the skillet. cheese is high fat. add cream cheese to your scrambled eggs. Use flax seed meal as your added fiber and get the benefits of a high fat very low carb fiber supplement. Make a cream of veggie soup. Nuts and nuit butters when you get to rung 3 of OWL are a great sourse of fats too.

                            Re: fibromyalgia sufferers

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia for over 8 years now. I'll be happy to answer any question you want as best as I can, either here or in PM. I've learned quite a bit over the years about fibro and if there is one thing I have learned, is to take control of my well-being and find alternative therapies in addition to the help of my doctor to find whatever helps me feel better, even just a little bit. Atkins has been one of those things that really surprised me about how well it worked, especially to help my fibro.

One very good website (get her books!):
                            Dr. Devin Starlanyl

Look for her document on perpetuating factors especially (things that make your fibro worse) and work on discovering yours and fixing them. Her books and information helped me alot in the beginning.

Atkins has been a life saver for me. My first year on Atkins, I didn't even exercise because I still felt so bad and was afraid to. My second year, I began doing cardio and lifting weights and this, in addition to the the Atkins diet, has helped me tremendously. I had to start out REALLY slow, like 5 mins at a time on the treadmill. I only exercised 1x per week for several months, then as I felt better, I added a 2nd day. Now I am up to 3 days per week and a mile on the treadmill plus weight training and free exercises. What ronnie said above about exercise is very true. It helps tremendously but take it slow to start with.

Other things that have really helped me ALOT:
                            • massage therapy - I get a massage once a month. It was really painful at first (and still is at times) but finding a good therapist helps
                            • chiropractic care - My pain levels went from 8s to 3s, my chiropractor practices atlas orthogonality and applied kinesiology as well as Brimhall's 10 steps to wellness
                            • vitamins - Magnesium, Malic Acid, B Complex, Melatonin. Do some research online, fibro sufferers are often deficient in these. I also found that CoQ10 has helped with my pain, especially in my joints
                            • strict sleep schedule - I also have a presc to help me sleep, there's a variety of meds that can help with this now Proper sleep is most important to fibro
                            • reducing stress and watching your activities - you can't do everything like a normal person, don't try to do to much, but don't not do anything either. Realize it might take you a few days to recover from major activities. Keep a journal to help you better gauge what your limitations are.

I rarely have to take pain meds any more, but I have prescriptions for when I need them. I have only had 2 flares in the past 6 months, and one was due to a minor car accident. I still have bad days here and there (like today) but not nearly on the level as pre-Atkins.

Use ADBB and your friends here to help you. ADBB taught me how to do Atkins right. It took me some time before I started feeling better, but I realize that I had alot of body healing to make up for poor eating habits and alot of extra weight.

Feel free to ask questions or pm me.
