  • Atkins without a Gallbladder

    Hello,
I am on my 4th day of Induction, and everything I eat seems to give me diarrhea. I have done Atkins in the past and not experienced this problem, as a matter of fact usually the opposite. The main physical difference between this time and last is that I had my gallbladder taken out a little over a year ago. Sometimes, just not having a gallbladder can cause certain foods to give you the runs, but now it appears that everything does. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have any suggestions?

    Re: Atkins without a Gallbladder

I had my gall bladder removed *while* on Atkins.

A couple suggestoins: try adding either more flax seed in your diet or a flax seed supplement, or psyilium husk supplement. They help with constipation and diarrhea.

One of the issues I had with my gall bladder before and after is a sensitivity to eggs and pork products, common to gall bladder issues. You might see if you have similar issues, as these are common gall bladder triggers, even after you have it removed (it is for me) and it gives me the same issues as you. Since I have avoided those foods, I feel better. It could be other food sensitivities doing it too that a change in diet could trigger this at first while in Induction.

See if these things help. They have helped me alot.

I won't chalk it up to your gall bladder yet. Most of us get constipated when we start this plan, but I am sure the reverse is also true OR, you may be eating some sugar alcohols that will clean you out in a heart beat.
What have you been eating. Any candy or sweets that might contain sugar alcohol?

Jimmie48 Thanks For The Link To The Other Thread There Is A Lot Of Good Info There. I Am Pretty Sure It Wasn't Anything In My Diet, I Have Been Doing A Clean Induction And Am Still On Track. The Last Couple Of Days Have Been Much Better, I Think It Was Probably Just The Change In Diet.

            Re: Atkins without a Gallbladder

Hi Lucy, I had a problem with diarrhea after my gal bladder surgery. It lasted two years. My surgeon prescribed Questron (comes in a canister and mixed with water to drink), and that helped considerably. It is really for high colestoral, but also stops the diarrhea as an ''off label'' Rx. He said it is not normal, but common and should be back to normal soon, after two years. If I remember correctly, he said what happens is a stone or sludge can fall down into the duodenim during surgery and can cause pain and diarrhea. I had both. At first he had me take an over the counter diarrhea meds in pill form, but that was about $6.00 a day. The canister of Questron was about $38.00 for a month. It had nothing to do with which food I ate, at least for me. Hope this helps, Babs
