    SUCKS!!!

I am not sure how many of you live with chronic pain but ..to tell the truth I do ..and I hate it and refuse to let it rule my life! there are all types of pain..the origin is not as important to me as the affect it has on peoples lives! If I see 100 people in triage in a day then I can assure you half at least have some form of chronic pain! and a full third are there for threatment of it...

I see so many people caught it a Catch 22 ...they have pain...gain wt...are told excercise (valid) will help the pain..but because of the weight it hurts to move ..so they don't move ...they take more pills that make them tired and unhappy so the doctors put them on antidepressants ...more weight gain ..OMG IT JUST SUCKS...

there are days I wake up hurting so badly I want to puke ....seriously....but if I take drugs there are side effects that I don't want so I have to just deal with it....

movement is the best thing for my type of pain problem...but sometimes I am flat out tired and want to just flop! so ...I flop then I hurt so bad I can not sleep....

I just wanted to rant/share/validate eachother ... about pain and see if any of you empathise ..have chronic pain issues ...how you deal with them and your weightloss efforts ....how you ease your pain with out drugs ..or with drugs ...

things I do that help me are

-lots of hot showers and soaks in the tub
-move my asss as much as possible
-try to get up at least twice during an 8 hour sleep to move so I hurt lest less in the morning...
-I do take over the counter pain killer when I need them...ibuprofen is my friend..
    -I keep well hydrated
work a job that has me running all day so I dont think so much about it
-try really hard to remember I am human and human beings do have pain ..it is my choice how I deal with it not the pain's choice...
-I have just found some perfect river rocks and my husband (who has a horrible back issue) and I are learning to do hot rock massages on each other ....very nice
-I also use a Vietnamese cupping set when things get bad and that really gives relief but I have been trianed to do accupunture so I know the points and would not rec someone just try this with out some training ...
-I know you will roll your eyes but I think sex really helps too I have as much as possible because nothing beats endorphins when it comes to making your body feel less pain ...

I do think it sucks big time to feel like this ...and am so sad as a nurse that I can not help especially folks who have a lot of weight and chronic pain....
...my best advise is the one I have to tell myself every day...

"I will not let this interfear with my life ..I hurt no matter what so I can sit here and whine about it ..spend lots of time at the doctors trying one drug after another ...or just get on with my life and have some fun"

I am saying all of this outloud today because I need encouragement myself and reading my own words helps ....so does reading your words so please give them to me I am listening!!!!

and I sincerely hope that something I say here gives someone some relief

to all of you with chronic pain

    Re: chronic pain

    Good post Heidi! THanks.

I too try not to let my pain rule my life (back pain). I try to take as few painkillers as possible, preferring to do the push-it-to-the-back-of-my-mind thing. Only when it turns ultra nasty do I resort to drug help... and try to stick to relative littlies like aspirin.

I think one does get used to living with pain though... well, you damn well have to, don't you?!

My empathy to any others with chronic pain.

      Re: chronic pain

I have some hip pain which is real likely arthritis, but as long as I keep exercising and keep moving I don't really notice it. So I can't say that I truly understand chronic pain. But I can sympathize because I watched my mom deal with it for most of my life and some days she was absolutely miserable.

You gave your own best advice.... keep moving, do what you can to relieve it. Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Take deep breaths, relax and I KNOW you won't let it get the best of you.

        Re: chronic pain

Thanks guys ...Just a bad patch lately I think the weather is changing and my body feels like a barometer

my neck, fingers and toes really hurt this week

maybe I should try one of those warm wax treatments I have heard about? I wonder if you can buy the stuff and do it at home?

you dip your tootsies or fingers in warm wax and it is supposed to be very therapeutic...

hey I should not complain ..I can move!!!! and I can forget about it when I am busy ..so I am a helll of a lot better off than I could be huh?

as long as I can take care of my patients I am happy and when I am happy I feel no pain ..so I need to shut up, stop thinking about this ...be grateful it is just pain and nothing else ...enough whining time to carry on with life

        right??????

Oh I forgot about those....! I actually have one and they are wonderful. You can buy one (I think they call them parafin baths), put the chunks of wax in and it melts it for you. You can even leave them on and always have melted wax ready to dip your hands in.

And as an added bonus it makes your hands soft!

          And...... RIGHT!!!!

This is a medical supply site, but you can get them a lot cheaper than this. Homedics makes one. I'll keep looking but at least here you can see what they look like and the wax you get for them.

Cool Crystylp. Tks. My pain isn't in hands, rather, my back...but I know three people I can pass this tip on to. If it eases their condition some, that would be great. Never heard of it before in Italy...

                    Re: chronic pain

jack had one of the hot wax machines. his hands are so torn up from doing tile work. very dry, very sore. we didn't spend much money on it and it didn't last too long. BUT when he was able to use it, it did a good job. it made his hands feel better.

i would suggest getting one that was big enough to do both hands and feet.

                      Re: chronic pain

With fibromyalgia, I've been dealing with chronic pain for years. What you are saying Heidi is very true. Getting up and moving, eating right has made a huge difference in my pain levels, but so has alternative therapies. I dislike taking the strong pain meds and have now rarely take them since I've been losing weight and feeling better.

Other things that have helped me, especially my fibro:
                      - massage therapy
                      - good chiropractic care (my chiro is the BEST, he uses applied kinesiology and many other great techniques)
                      - proper and sufficent sleep
                      - Vitamins/supplements - B Complex, Magenesium, CoQ10 seem to help with my pain
                      - hot baths

I do still get pain flares here and there, usually due to weather or stress or not sleeping well but they are alot less often since losing weight and exercising and doing the above things.

Fortunately, I am stil young enough that the arthritis pain isn't too bad, yet, though I do have some leftover from juvenile rheumatoid that I had as a child. Am not looking forward to winter.

Heidi, glad you are feeling better. I too have fibromyalgia and I used to have a lot of pain, so much I couldn't pick up my daughter. I started exercising, and the pain went away. Good luck and I hope you stay pain free.......dawn
