He has his procedure at the end of this month, so we'll see how that goes. I think his pain is much reduced now that he is avoiding certain foods!

Hi, there: Newbie here and just wondering how your dad did with his surgery.

After yrs of yo-yo dieting, I started having problems at age 26 (1996) with my gallbladder. It started with excruciating pain at about 3am which was so bad, it caused me to continuously throw up. Actually, that action provided a little relief because it felt like I was being "massaged" from the inside. Anyhoo, after a few months of suffering, saw a doc, had the test with the dyes and was told that I too had sludge, had a slow drainage, but it was not serious enough for me to have surgery. Honest to God, after I saw the doc, the pain went away until Dec 2004. I had gained weight again over the years, started dieting with a low fat diet, and after eating a normal Christmas Eve dinner got an attack in the early morning of Christmas Day that lasted 4 hours. It was horrible and after a few more attacks, saw a new doctor (was living outside the US). Got an ultrasound and was told by the tech "It looks like a mine in there. I've never seen so many stones". Got my surgery scheduled and they took out (and saved since I asked) 30 gallstones that were the size of my little fingernail. It was shocking! Let me tell you, not having that kind of pain (worse than labor IMO) anymore is such a relief. I really hope your dad has found his spring in his step once again not worrying about will he have an attack after the next meal or will he be spared.

I fought having surgery on my gall bladder for years...but eventually the pain forced me to face reality. Had it removed lapriscopically and it was the best thing I've done for my health/happiness in a long time. That was 3+ years ago and I haven't noticed any side effects (other than a lack of pain). Within a week I was back on the racquetball court and treadmill and within 2 I was lifting weights again (lightly).

After speaking extensively with my doctor (she's a low carber!) she believes it was the long term low fat diet I had been using that led to the formation of the stones and associated liver dangers.
