  • Best way to treat a burn?

Ok, I've always sworn that fresh aloe juice is a miracle to burns. But...the plant I have now seems kinda crappy, and the aloe juice is very watery. At least compared with one I had a while back.

Anyhow, I have a very small burn on my tummy. Was wearing a short shirt while cooking, and my tummy touched the edge of the cookie sheet (was cooking pork LOL).

While it's small, it's a week old and such a nuisance that I have to put a bandaid over it. I keep accidentally scratching it because it's itchy and I forget it's there. another reason for the bandaid! The bandaid has to be loose too...neosporin is out of the question, because I put that on it last night with a bandaid and nearly howled because it hurt so bad.

It seems worse now because I've scratched the top layer off. Anyone have any good home remedies for treating burns?

    Thanks!!
    ~Lisa

Since it's already a few days old, neosporin isn't going to do much and it hurts, i agree.

A non-stick gauze pad lightly taped over it will help, but it's best to not cover it.
It's also important to keep it moist, silvadene is the best in my opinion.

Relief of pain and itching may be effected with local anesthetics, counterirritants, and antipruritics. Since application of solid products may stimulate further pain, aerosols are an effective alternative (e.g., Americaine Aerosol, Dermoplast, Solarcaine). If the skin has been broken, an antibacterial should be applied to prevent infection. Due to the possibility of allergy and contact sensitization, neomycin should be avoided. Antibacterials without neomycin include Polysporin, Betadine First Aid, hydrogen peroxide, and Betadine.

Here in olive oil land... predictably, they use olive oil on small burns. Works well imho. But as your burn is a week old don't think it would help much.
Keeping it covered sounds sensible to me.

I really need the bandaid to prevent my inadvertent scratching. When I replace the band-aid I'll make it looser (probably soon). Thanks Dotsamantha!!

Ah, olive oil is used in some moisturizers, so that does make sense using it for burns. Olive oil is great for so many reasons!!

Re: Best way to treat a burn?

Ouch! I hope it's started to heal and feels better. Sounds like that smarts! I know sometimes I go in the kitchen and have to remind myself to put on my canvas apron and wear closed toe shoes. I burned my bare skin on my thigh once while ironing a my pair of pants. Once was enough.

Burns can easily get infected. Do not hesitate to call a doctor or nurse practitioner asap if it does not show improvement, start to heal, or have less pain, or even just call them anyway. Since neosporin would be what I would use, but that hurt you, there are anti bacterial sprays with pain relief made for burns. I know it's hard, but you may need to really rest a day or two to avoid what you are doing to scratch it and see if it will heal. Hope you start to have a speedy healing!

I burned myself when I was blowing glass, and on my boob of all places!. I took a piece of aloe, split it open, but it on the burn, and put a bandaid over it. I would change the aloe every few hours, and it worked miraculously! It was cooling, moisturizing, prevented me from scratching, and worked on sensitive skin.
