  • Flustered at the doctor's

Anyone else get flustered when going to the doctor? Well, I don't always... but when it does happen... heavens! It's so silly! And my father was a doctor, so I should be used to the breed!!!

Yesterday I had a couple of stitches removed from my head (slipped on a seaweedy shelf and hit my head on a sea wall). On the way to the doctor's I could feel those stitches tingling very clearly... but when I got inside the surgery, suddenly I couldn't feel a thing anymore.

The doctor started looking for the wound on my head, but it was sort of lost in the forest of my hair (it's thick and they only shaved a tiny little bit round the wound). So... I then tried to feel for them but, guess what? I couldn't find them either!
There I was, fiddling around with my fingers in my hair, and not being able to feel the wretched things at all! I almost began to think I'd combed them out as the bandages had been removed two days previously! Talk about embarrassing...not knowing where your own stitches are!

Eventually the doc said to me: "You keep searching while I make a phone call".
Only after he left the room to make the call, did i manage to find those pesky stitches!!

Did I feel like a right nincompoop! Oh well!

Also, when I go to the doctor, I really need to make a list of questions to ask, 'cos there's a good chance my mind will go totally blank when I get to the surgery!

    Am I the only one?

    Re: Flustered at the doctor's

I hate when I leave and then remember the questions I meant to ask the doctor. Obviously they didn't need to shave any hair when they did the stitches so that is a good thing. I am glad you didn't do anything more serious when you fell.

I have those same kinda feelings Sally. I hear ya. And I hate feeling, what's the word? Not inferior....... Intimidated! I hate that! And some of these doctors are YOUNGER (way younger!) than I am now! THAT irritates me!
I am going through a bunch of doctor stuff with family this past month. And I'll tell ya. I'm not liking any of it or them! All too busy, being left feeling like a number, ya know?

        Re: Flustered at the doctor's

i am a question person. whenever i have to go to the doctor i try to ask things even if it sounds stupid. i let them know every little pill that i've taken, vitamins, herbs, otc pain meds like exedrin. i am always asking b/p readings and such. putting things in writing before the visit would be a good idea.

I'm a mess at the doctor's from the very beginning!

          "Fine thanks! How are you?"

          "...."

"Oh. Actually, I have a really sore throat and a cough. Sorry."

                Re: Flustered at the doctor's

I think the only time I got flustered at the docs was when I had to show a trio of female docs and xray techs something in a very private area. I am not sure a pair of male docs would have been comfortable, but it wouldn't have been that bad.

                  Re: Flustered at the doctor's

I don't necessarliy get flustered, but I definitely get "clinic" high blood pressure. it's due to the traffic and horrible parking. i try to mellow out but my bp is always higher there.

Wow! Seems I'm in good company then! And yes... 'intimidated' is exactly the right word!

"Hi I'm fine" at the docs is so funny Curveegrrl!

Lol Kent! It's called: Fun at the Doctors!

Tks Atkid... and no, they didn't need to shave much hair...just a little bit around the wound, which was really small.

Jimmie... always good to put the doc in the picture fully. Better too much info than too little imho. He can sift out what's not relevant...

Dotsamantha... I hear you on getting to the docs pushing up the ol B/P! Am sooo glad my doc's in a little village so don't have either traffic or parking probs!

                      Re: Flustered at the doctor's

Ever since I was in high school, I've worked around doctors and hospitals. I was a "candy striper" at a hospital and did filing at a private office. During college, I did more of the same. Anyhow, I can. not. stand. being a patient. I thoroughly warn all the doctors who come in contact with me about this and they're pretty good about it.

It's sheer dread on my appointment days.....really nervous, flustered, etc. And don't be around me if I need to have blood work done or (worse) get a shot!!!!!

Oh megs, I agree...shots are soooo horrid! I too worked around doctors for a few years (nursing)... I think working with 'em just makes it worse!
