  • No money for a medical test....

I have been worrying and praying about this issue for a while.....
Maybe someone will have some ideas...

I am a 49 year old female in good health.
My mother died a little over a year ago with colon cancer.

I feel like I desperately need to get a colonoscopy test done-
My problem is I have no insurance and do not have $3,000+
dollars it takes to pay for one.

Will they let you pay it out monthly? Is there any place you
could have the test done for free? I am so scared I am sitting
here with colon cancer and no way to find out until it will be
too late Many times there are no symptoms....
I wonder how many children get it if their mother or dad died from
it? Anyone else been in this or a similar situation?

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest....maybe I can come up
with a reasonable solution and stop all this worrying.

you can get a free colorectal screening done during March , colon health month when they do a promotion for it in your area. check with your locak hospitak or do an internet seach.

also many health fairs ioffer free screenings. if your test cones back positiive then you can work on the up the rung screenings. al;so check and see if any studies are going on in your area cause they will provide free med testings if yu sign up with them. they have a home testing kit you can buy too.

I realize this isn't as good as the scoping but it is better then waiting.

Sorry I can't answer to how you will get a test as I live in Canada, I think 2Big had some good suggestions though.

My mother died of cancer (started in her colon), My dr. told me that I should get tested at the age that would be 10 yrs before the age that she originally got it. She was 45 when she was first diagnosed, so I should get tested at 35. Didn't find this out till earlier this year..so I will start this year. I have an appt in late nov.

I've heard this is the rule normally for any cancers if they are in your family...

        Hello, Pie4me,

First things first. If your going pray doing worry and if your going to worry don't pray. Next go to your local hospital and ask to speak with a Social Worker and let them no that you have no health insurance and feel you are in need of a colonoscopy. They will be able to secure information and access to either free (state) or low cost insurance to pay for the procedure. Peace and take care of you.

He said regular colonoscopy's which I assume is scoped? I do know there is also a blood test for it as well from what i've heard it's not as realiable (though i'd much prefer the blood test lol).

I didn't ask him how often it would be I would guess every couple of years?

              pie,
do you frequent a church by chance? you may have some doctors or technicians that attend that could supply some info on clinics or free screening for things. if you don't belong to a church, you might still call one because most have lists for free things or discounted things. my church back home had such lists because of the homeless, transients and the poor population. we also had a couple of doctors that did check ups and such for free for the poorer folks in our congregation.

You guys really did give me some options to consider and that is
what I needed. I knew I could count on you!

Re: No money for a medical test....

                  One last thing -

Unless your doctor says otherwise, you probably don't need a colonoscopy as your first step. Instead, ask your GP for a fecal blood test and/or a flexible sigmoidoscopy/double contract barium enema. This is often the first first tests doctors look at when considering colon cancer - if these tests come up positive, your doctor is likely to suggest that you need a colonscopy. If they're negative, your worries will be put to rest (but you should have these tests done once a year since you have a family history, just to be on the safe side).

Both of these procedures your GP should be able to perform (and at a much lower rate than a colonscopy). If not, try your state's Department of Health which may offer a sliding scale fee for these procedures.
