  • Heartburn/GERD

After starting Atkins, my acid reflux mostly disappeared. Now it's back...I don't understand! I'm not eating that much differently. It's gotten so bad I had to buy sugar free Tums which I'm not sure does much anyway.

I'll have to go see my doc and get Prevacid again. I wish I knew why it came back.

The only thing I've added are mushrooms... don't think they cause heartburn though. I'm worried it's possibly the pepperoni...however i haven't had any today (or mushrooms) and I have heartburn already. Then again my stomach is really messed up today (nausea) so maybe it's related to a stomach virus. I can't wait to go home.

        Re: Heartburn/GERD

Ironically, since starting Atkins my acid reflux has come back with a vengence! I don't know why? I know it's a cycle with me my asthma flares up which triggers my acid reflux. I went to a indoor gun range and the air was getting to me. I am also allergic to sulfate and when I drink a lot of water I can get acid reflux (Im so weird) I think perhaps there is natural sulfate in the water. I started taking Prilosic OTC but does any one have any suggestions?

My reflux always improves on Atkins. Maybe try checking out a Pur or Brita filter on your water if you think it is the sulfates. It might remove whatever is setting you off.

              Re: Heartburn/GERD

Drinking too much water can give you heartburn. I noticed when I go above the 80oz range I begin to have terrible heartburn. If I cut back on my water a bit the heartburn goes away. I remember reading a book called Your Bodies Many Cries For Water; You're Not Sick; You're Just Thirsty and the Dr. that wrote the book said that one major cause of heartburn is drinking too much water; it dilutes the stomach acid too much. That is a really good book and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a very simple solution to quite a few common illnesses; water is so important to the body's systems but it can be overdone, so balance is important! Hope this helps.
